Nate July 11, 2009 July 11, 2009 I posted this question in the fragfest thread but got no replies. So here it is again. Where did those brown frag plugs that were given out at the frag fest come from? I want to buy some but the only plugs I can find have a tapered end.
droyal1110 July 11, 2009 July 11, 2009 I think it was donated by fins and feathers but don't quote me on that. I know bulkreefsupply.com sells like 25 for 5 bucks. Or you can create your own (which I just did) using the techniques demonstrated at frag fest, its really really easy. Just get the concrete, 20 dollar bag of aragonite, mix to consistency, and cut a piece of pvc pipe, pack it in, pull it out of the pvc, and let it cure for 24 hours at least in the air and let it sit in water for a week.

Bulk reef supply sells Oceans Wonders plugs that have a tapered end. I have bought these before and they are not what I was looking for. I would like to find a place that sells them online vs. making them. I am looking for plugs like the one on the left. The plug on the right is from Oceans Wonders and is tapered. Edit: I am pretty sure that is the same plug on the Dr Fosters site. lanman July 12, 2009 July 12, 2009 YOU ARE THE MAN!!! Those are them. I have been looking all day for these things. Thanks. Those are ceramic plugs. Boston Aqua Farms also sells ceramic plugs - but they are white, and have an indentation in the top for the corals. To think - 10 years ago, someone offered me a kiln, which he ended up taking to the dump. I could be making these things! I wonder how much 'Coffee-Time' would charge me to fire 100 of them. bob
droyal1110 July 12, 2009 July 12, 2009 It wasn't 94 pounds, however it was something like 40 pounds =( But its ok we've been using it to create rock structures and frag plugs. I'm pleased with the cost of materials for how much stuff we can make. Still cheaper than buying base rock.

droyal1110 July 13, 2009 July 13, 2009 I got type II from home depot, average cost of rock per lb is like $0.97 including the aragonite. Only issues I'm running into now is we used a huge piece in the new tank and when we added salt we got TONS of reef snows due to the properties of the rock. I mean 1-2 inches of reef snow piling up that needs to be siphoned out. Its going to be a long cycle.
