June Meeting (6-19-04)

"June's meeting will be held on Saturday, June 19th.  Adam Cesnales will be presenting a talk and slide show on the identification and care of Soft Corals and Xeniids.  This is a week earlier than normal to facilitate a club road trip to Washington DC and Baltimore to attend the WAMAS Symposium and to tour the National Aquarium in Baltimore, the following weekend (June 26,27).

The road trip to DC/Baltimore will leave Pittsburgh either on Friday, June 25 in the evening or very early on Saturday, June 26 depending on member feedback.  We will return at a a reasonable time on Sunday evening.  A form will be included in the May newsletter to sign up for the trip.  PMASI will provide group transportation to the event and back, including a meal on the bus each way.  Exact costs are to be determined, but should be available by the time the newsletter is sent out."

Thanks to everyone who:  attended, participated, organized and presented!

This event was a stunning success!

Dr. Mac & Sons really put a strong show on the road and made some fantastic colonies available.

Adam's talk really helped clarify today's understanding of soft corals.  Now if only he could stop people from reclassifying them... :-)

John's talk on issues affecting the hobby and the trade was really informative.  Feedback from the audience was a key part of this... "Please educate us more on these issues!" and "How can we participate more?"

Joe's talk on lighting really showed us the results and methods on 250W MH lighting.  Nice to have this compared to most prior studies, which were on 400W setups, as it helps a greater majority out given we tend to predominantly use 250W lighting.

Daphne wins the most entertaining speaker award.  Not just entertaining, but truly informative.  We were lucky to have her!

Bruce wins the "content award" with his stunning videos of live reef systems.  He showed how reefs can die off and how there seems to be three possible responses... stay dead, partial recovery, full recovery.  The switch to algal reef is a concern and we hope we can influence this more in the future.

And the RAFFLE... can we just say AMAZING!

Two winning $10 tickets had two people walk away with a pair of Open Water Dive Certifications and the other with a full 90G tank, stand and hood setup.  There were more smiles on peoples faces than you can imagine!

Thanks again to all who participated and made this event the success of the year for WAMAS!

And it was fun to hear Bruce tell the little "secret" stories behind some of the fish names!

What a great group of speakers, and what really amazed me was the great group of attendees that pitched in.  Thank you everyone who brought yummy desserts and salads, helped physically set up and move the tables, ran out for more food (Sunny!  Oh, Happy Anniversary, by the way!) and who participated in the organization of the lunch delivery and ticket checks (Yes, you Tree and Henry!).  It was so nice to continually hear, "is there anything I can do to help?"

And Steve, you, Michael, Glenn, Craig, Scott and Nathan are absolutely amazing!  I cannot believe the work that you guys did in such a short period of time.  I don't believe that there was a stone left unturned.  You all deserve our gratitude for providing a very stimulating day not only for the ticket holders but for the speakers.  I know that Bruce was happy to see Daphne and that they began their friendship about 25 years ago.  The speakers recognized and expressed appreciation of how well the symposium was organized.  This really sets groundwork for MACNA next year.
