Origami October 5, 2009 October 5, 2009 Paul, those look like PVC 2x4's in part. Is that what they are? Also, I see that yo've changed from the bubbler that you had in your old wormkeeper, so obviously you're pretty comfortable with the screen at the right side not letting worms pass into the pump impeller - or maybe that's why you have the jar in the tank that looks like it's acting as a sediment filter to catch worms. What's with the tube on the left side of the design? Is it just a vestigal component from your old design approach? Also, what's with the extra volume in the 10 gallon tank? I'm guessing that it eases your maintenance schedule since you don't have to compensate for evaporation quite as often as the old system. I really love the practical DIY solutions you come up with!
paul b October 8, 2009 Author October 8, 2009 Is it just a vestigal component from your old design approach? Thats what it is, I was too lazy to remove it. The screens just slow down the worms, there are barriers that go to the water surface that keep the worms from going into the tank. The worms sink so they don't usually go over the wall. The outflow of the trough and input to the small tank is raised a half inch to further delay the worms passage into the tank below. If a few do go into the tank, they fall into a container where I can easily suck them out. I only get five or six worms in there daily. They like hanging onto the screens above. A friend of mine owns a PVC fence factory so I have an unlimited supply of different size scrap plastic. The tank is only 2 gallons I think. It is easy to siphon out the water from there without disturbing the worms in the trough. This is part of my life, I am an inventer and always looking for another way to do things. No project is ever fully completed. They are all ongoing as I am sure this one will be modified again, and again, and again etc.
