Where to buy Rare-Earth Magnets

If you don't mind rubber coating them yourself, you can pull 2 out of each of your old hard drives. Typically (depending on the physical size of the drive) they are about 2" x 1/2". So strong they pinched my skin into a blood blister. They have also broken nails and done some serious damage to computer equipment and wallets nearby (within a foot).

FYI: The ones from HDs are incredibly brittle and incredible strong. They are typically over 1 Tesla in magnetic field strength (which is HUGE). In fact it takes a bit of effort and technique to separate two that are together. Also, if you let them slam together there is a change one or both will crack in half.

In the pic in the link above. The metal plate on top is the magnet and the metal plate below is the magnet shield that shields the rest of the computer. They are glued together and can be seperated with a flat head screw driver and little persuasion. Interestingly, the shields are not magnetic at all which is why the magnets are glued to it.

yes ....Group buy.I'm in. Bob can you start one?

Yeah, really. How's this for a cautionary note?:

If you really need unbelievably powerful magnets, here they are.

Uses include magnetic steering of nuclear particles in accelerators, levitation devices, magnetic beam amplifiers, scrap iron separators, etc.

Beware - you must think ahead when moving these magnets.

If carrying one into another room, carefully plan the route you will be taking. Sensitive instruments like computers & monitors will be affected in an entire room. Loose metallic objects and other magnets may become airborne and fly at great speed to attach themselves to these magnets. If you get caught in between the two, you can be severely injured. These magnets will crush bones in the blink of an eye.

Two of these magnets close together can create an almost unbelievable magnetic field that can be incredibly dangerous.

Of all the unique items we offer for sale, we consider these items the most dangerous of all. Our normal packing & shipping personnel refuse to package these magnets - our engineers have to do it. This is no joke or exaggeration - and we cannot stress it strongly enough. You must be extremely careful - and know what you're doing with these magnets.

Two Supermagnets can very easily get out of control, crush fingers and instantly break ribs or even your arm if opposing poles fly at each other.

A small child recently lost his hand when his father left two # 31 supermagnets unattended. The child picked one up and when he approached the other magnet on a nearby table, it became airborne and obliterated his small hand.

I am looking for a bunch(at least 8) of Rare-Earth magnets for, 1 mounting a frag, and 2 for a power head. Anyone know where to purchase them locally? if not anyone ordered this from http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/ ?

Radio Shack used to carry "Earth Magnets" that were pretty strong. I don't remember if they were labeled as "rare Earth Magnets" or not. That was about 14 years ago. But you can give them a try.

Edmunds Scientific has a bunch of those as well.

I am going to attempt something before purchasing. I have two dead hard drives and I pulled the magnets out of them. I am going to apoxy one to the powerhead bracket and the other will be outside the tank. If it works I will post a diy.

After letting the glue and the silicon cure overnight, I am currently testing the hard drive magnet bracket and will post an update later and maybe a DIY if anyone is interested.
