Hilary December 10, 2008 December 10, 2008 What size return pumps are people using on their nanos? I've set up a 24 gallon aquapod, and am having problems finding a return pump. I've read about the maxi-jet 900, but the MJ powerhead has a hose barb that is too small to fix the stock return hose and the MJ utility pump has a hose barb that is too large. Both put out about 247 gph. It's as if the system was actually made to fit more of an MJ400, but would 106 gph really be enough? I plan to have a little bit of everything in the tank, including SPS. Or should I just root around in the bins at BRK and see if they have the correct size barb? This stuff drives me crazy........
zygote2k December 10, 2008 December 10, 2008 I'm sure the stock gph is fine. I have a 12g and it was as simple as removing the splitter and loc-line to see a 1000% increase in overall water flow. The cyano literally got blown off the sand.
Hilary December 10, 2008 Author December 10, 2008 I'm not sure what the stock gph is supposed to be for this tank (bought it used). I'm sure it can be whatever you want it to be, but obviously since it comes plumbed the manufacturer had something specific in mind. Guess I need to see if I can find manufacturer specs for the system.
smarsh97 December 10, 2008 December 10, 2008 I upgraded to a MJ900. I had to use a piece of tubing small enough to fit on the Maxi jet and then slipped that into the tubing that came with the tank. I wish I could tell you what size but it's been so long I can't remember. Sandy
gmubeach December 10, 2008 December 10, 2008 You can also add a few korlinas thats what I did when I was having flow problems:)

Hilary December 11, 2008 Author December 11, 2008 Well, I spent about an hour and a half last night heating and stretching the stock tubing until I could stretch it over the hose barb for the utility pump. Finally got it on - woo hoo! Made sure to jam it on far enough that I could zip-tie it, so hopefully it shouldn't pop off. I stopped in Atlantis Aquariums when I was in Richmond yesterday and they agreed that it was a really weird size, so at least it wasn't just me. That combined with the Koralia 1 seem to be keeping everything moving in the tank without creating a sandstorm, and the dust film that had accumulated on the surface is now gone. Adventures in nano-keeping!
