Well,

I identified a new crab to battle the mantis.

I cranked up my lights, cleaned my glass, moved the specimen container, and adjusted my camera.

Better video quality this time. I used a small fiddler crab. Next time I'm going to use a huge fiddler crab.

Recommend clicking the "watch in high quality" near the lower right of the video frame.

I decided not to attach string this time. Looks like I didn't need it...

Dude

i love your post' and now i love your videos!!!!

How big's the tank?

Groovy music, btw. Really sets the mood

Thanks.

He's in my fuge, which is a 40BR. You can see a bunch of macro at the top of the tank in that video.

I had to go through a copyright process to use that (30 year old) music in that video. What a drag.

Here is a couple shots of the fuge for scale. You can see the mantis in the second pic.

Given his behavior, I wouldn't hesitate to keep in in a 10G tank. He's always either in his hole or right outside it.

The loud static sound is water splashing into my sump from my display upstairs. I need to turn off my return for my next video. You can see the sump to the right of the fuge.

Great video! The more videos I watch of mantis shrimp the more likely I am to get a smasher for the classroom one of these days! Countless 5th graders have been asking for 5 years now to get mantis shrimp into the classroom, maybe this will be the year if I find a good looking one like that! I even tried to go to stomatopod.com and they had none in stock... too bad Roozens is so far away!

WOW! I want one. They look about pinki sie, is that about right?

Other than chillin' in your fuge, do you have to do anything special to keep them - food, ec t .

Hi.

They come in many shapes/sizes/colors.

This one is about twice the length of my pinky (he's pretty big). I often see them twice the size of this one, but it's more common to see them half the size of this one.

Very simple animal to care for. Usually, I give him a chunk of raw shrimp (from the grocery store) about once a week (about the size of a small marble). Couldn't be easier. I like to wave it around on a feeding prong while he chases it until he gets it.

When I'm feeling inspired, I'll feed it a nuisance crab someone gave me, or an emerald crab I might buy for him. Nowadays I found a very cheap ($1.99) source for fiddlers, which get pretty big and can live in salt water for a while, so I'll be using them.

Yah, stomatopod.com is kind of disappointing. I had plans a while back to keep several types that I gave up on. I was trying to get them from stomatopod.com.

Roozen's is close to me. I can let you know if I see a nice one there if you like.

Roozen's had two, pinky-sized Peacocks about 1 month or so ago. Not sure if they're still there. I wonder if their availability is seasonal?
