lhcorals November 19, 2008 November 19, 2008 I understand, i just wanted to state we do what is nesasary to make our tanks more healthy. We all would rather put less in our tanks, but it always does'nt work out that way.

gmubeach November 19, 2008 Author November 19, 2008 Yeppers I mean everything even the salt comes from somewhere chemical! Anyway still pulling away its been 3 days now with non stop pulling I need to take the rock out and scrub it!
treesprite November 19, 2008 November 19, 2008 (edited) Here is an idea, good or bad, take it or leave it: Rather than take all the rock out and make it no longer liverock, plus putting yourself through all that work, what about just covering the liverock with something inside of the tank? This would put darkness over the caulerpa's anchoring area so that it would stop growing, and if you left the cover there long enough, you wouldn't even have to pick pieces off the rock because it would all be dead. If there are corals or anything attatched to any rock, you could just put holes in the cover for them to poke through, and you could put holes to correspond to the openings of the fishes nooks and caves. I'm thinking thick, dark, aquarium-safe plastic that you would anchor down around teh base of it. You would just have to be careful about fish going up under it - I would leave a couple inch gap between the rock surface and the plastic using tookpisks or something. gmubeach November 19, 2008 Author November 19, 2008 I had actaully thought about this, but was worried that the dieing culurpa would release alot of nutrients and then another form of algee would take hold!
treesprite November 19, 2008 November 19, 2008 I had actaully thought about this, but was worried that the dieing culurpa would release alot of nutrients and then another form of algee would take hold! I'm sure there's someone here who could say what might happen to a tank's water quality if there was a mass caulerpa die-off. Maybe you need to ask in a separate thread.... "what woul mass caulerpa die-off do to my water?"
gmubeach November 19, 2008 Author November 19, 2008 Yep I will have to ask again:) Anyway I have a wamas member coming over tonight I've been pulling and doing waterchanges and running phosoban and trying to limit feeding it seems to be dieing back a little anyway I hope to get these frags cut and ready to go!
gmubeach November 21, 2008 Author November 21, 2008 Anyway more radical methods are needed.... Anyone have an suggestions? I've been told to remove the rock and soak for an hour in rodi water then scrub it I"m going to frag whats left of my coral on the rocks and then pull whats left out of the sand and hope and pray the stuff doesn't come back..I'm at my wits end this stuff is the devil:( Anyone have any ideas?
gmubeach November 21, 2008 Author November 21, 2008 Seems to be working first strip off all corals and pods and such and then lift out of water... then put back in the water and the remaining pods will exit the rock then put it in pure ro/di water and watch as the stuff melts. I then took a vegitable scrubber and I've gotten rid of most of it I'm going to place the live rock in a pen for 1 day to see if its really dead:)

That's why I was trying to think of something else. I just hope after all your work that the stuff doesn't ever grow back.
gmubeach November 21, 2008 Author November 21, 2008 I know I think I will have enough filtration to keep it going:( I have a ton of rock in my sump you should see the tons of critters dieing:( Anyway I'm keeping on with the pulling and dipping until its gone!
gmubeach November 21, 2008 Author November 21, 2008 Its down to 1% of what it was.... I got a little left in my tank that I can't get rid of, but I suppose its going to take time I literally pulled out a ton of rock, scrubed it, and then dipped it in ro water to kill everything... anyway I ended up selling a ton of rock, I hope this is the end.... I wish my bubble tip would stay still it keeps moving over my crocea clam?
vaironman November 22, 2008 November 22, 2008 (edited) Troy, HA usually happens when these possible conditions are not met: 1) adequate skimming (need to check if your skimmer size comparing with your tank water volume, gallons). 2) overfeeding. 3) not using ro/di water 4) not enough water flow, need to increase water circulation inside the tank and through the skimmer. HTH, KLee PS: My bad. I'll remember your name forever now. Sorry about that, Troy. Cheers! Edited November 22, 2008 by vaironman
lhcorals November 22, 2008 November 22, 2008 But your rock is not liverock anymore. That's why I was trying to think of something else. I just hope after all your work that the stuff doesn't ever grow back. The rock is still Live rock, it just need a little time to recoperate. Remember when Live rock is collected it out of water for a long time on the dock's.
gmubeach November 22, 2008 Author November 22, 2008 I should have all of the conditions met.... I have the following a remora c hang on skimmer, a refugium, two korlinia nanos, and I feed less then a pinch a day.... I swear I think the stuff was thriving off of my lighting alone.... anyway I got rid of most of it best wishes Troy
gmubeach November 22, 2008 Author November 22, 2008 oh and its Troy for some strange reason ever since we've met that one time you've called me josh:) I don't mind so much as josh is a decent name, but I thought I'd tell you my real name is Troy

I think I know, but I don't want to say then be wrong.
treesprite November 23, 2008 November 23, 2008 That's what I thought, you you know, I'd be a little embarrassed socially if I got it wrong
gmubeach November 23, 2008 Author November 23, 2008 I'm sure there are many people with the name josh though I think alot of people are named Bob on here.. I've only met two Bobs in my life in reel life and I've met 2 on wamas already:) As for the macro we are down to 2% of what I've had still plucking away... a danergous side note though after giving away most of my rock my anemee is moving by the hour and he randomly attachs to things like my large crocea... anyway I'm glad to be rid of it hopefully for good!
