The serpent star in my Caribbean tank almost always stays hidden, and usually I forget he's even there.

But last night when I fed the tank, he decided there was something that took his fancy at the top of the tank:

Sorry for the cr*ppy pic...I was in a hurry!

It took me a good five minutes to find my cam, so he was up there for a few minutes longer.

I didn't know they could do that!

I have seen my basically walk across the tank to get to a morsel of food and up high too. It figured out that at feeding time it could position itself near the output of a powerhead and catch the food easily. Intelligence there. Also, if a fish dies, these things take care of them. Helpful when a fish dies behind the rockwork. They will grab a fish also and make it dead!

Mine has been banished to the sump for a while now. It is about 15 inches across when arms are extended.

They are a great show for kids to see them go after food as most people think of star fish as slow docile creatures.

... They will grab a fish also and make it dead! ...

I've never had a problem with smooth-legged serpent stars in the past...they have always been model reef citizens :)

I stayed away from the hairy-legged ones, until Ken from sealifeinc assured me that the ones with hairy black legs were reef-safe!

So AFAIK the only non-reef safe ones are the green hairy-legged ones.

Yep, that is the kind I have.

Good, you had me worried for a bit!

I think the serpent star in my 75G is taking cues from his counterpart in the 29G:

I got about a 10" one hitchhiking in LR from marine scene one time

When I got home, he was sitting in the box on the wet newspaper as if to say, "where is the water?"

My sandsifting star will do that too. It'll get almost to the powerhead at the top of the tank and then fall down. Good exercise I guess?
