fry_school101 April 28, 2008 April 28, 2008 Does anyone have a link to the thread on his latest tank? I'd like to get another look at those rock towers and the search engine on RC decided I wasn't one of the lucky users today Also curious, where was that web site that he gets everything off of? Car something?
Grav April 30, 2008 April 30, 2008 Thorite mortar / cement. Where is he getting that? Couldn't find it on McMaster Fell in love with that site tho... all kinds of stuff.
YBeNormal April 30, 2008 April 30, 2008 From Sanjay's thread I could not find it at Lowes. I called the headquarters and they gave me the name of a store in town that could get it for me. There are 2 types that I have used. This time I used the general purpose Thorite since that was the only one available in stock without having to wait for a special order. It seems to work just as well as the other one that I had used several years ago - Thorite Rapid Overhead. I think you'll have to call around to find a local store that carries it.
fry_school101 April 30, 2008 Author April 30, 2008 Does anyone remember how thick of rods he used? I wouldn't think they would need to be very thick, but I didn't see the information or pics of the rock tower assembly on either part of the thread.

Grav May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 Okay, so neither mail order, nor commonly available. My carbon Fiber Rod came today, got an assortment of sizes to test the flex / strnegth. 1/2 seems pretty strong, 5/8 is darn near impossible to bend. All much much stronger than acrylic rod of the same length. I cut a piece using a carbide tip blade on a chop saw... the end turned out a bit frayed and the fiberglass got a bit flakey, which caused concern a bit. Anyone thoughts on cutting carbon fiber rod?

OUsnakebyte May 2, 2008 May 2, 2008 I'm making at least one, perhaps more, of these columns/pillars/pinnacles for tanks at work. I ordered 10' of 3/4" fiberglass rod, and it is very stable. Most of my columns will be between 3' and 4' (maybe some smaller ones), and 3/4" is just fine. For something 2' or less, I think you would be fine with 1/2". Of course, the drill bit I bought at Home Depot is the largest, biggest, honkin' bit I've ever used. It is a 3/4" masonry drill bit, but it cuts through most of my rocks like butter. I'm just using regular cement to stabilize the rocks, and I busted up a cinder block for the base. Cheers Mike
ctenophore May 3, 2008 May 3, 2008 sch40 PVC works just as well. I've tried solid rod, fiberglass, acrylic and they all work. But PVC is cheapest! Here are some pics for more ideas. Mike that 3/4 bit is awesome, huh?? If you use it in a hammerdrill it will go through anything like butter, including wooden decks and brick patios!
sanjay May 6, 2008 May 6, 2008 I used 1/2" fiber glass rods. The cement I was talking about is called Thorite Here is a link for more info on it. http://www.thoroproducts.com/pdf_info/INF_RITE_7.05.pdf Have fun. sanjay.

OUsnakebyte May 7, 2008 May 7, 2008 Mike that 3/4 bit is awesome, huh?? If you use it in a hammerdrill it will go through anything like butter, including wooden decks and brick patios! Yes, I do feel much more "manly" with my new drill bit!
fry_school101 May 7, 2008 Author May 7, 2008 i'm afraid i must question your manliness seeing as you are missing the battery!
ctenophore May 7, 2008 May 7, 2008 Real men don't need batteries, we just turn the entire drill by hand to make the holes.
