Hi

I have 4 of these moonlights modules on my 55 gallon tank. These are less than a year old from dr fosters and smith and should have a lot of life left in them. They run about 14 hours a day. They put out rather pointed cones of light. I have noticed that where the light shines, I have green hair algae growing on those areas.

Is this a coincidence or is this a side-affect of moonlights?

Thanks!

This is exaclty what I have (the blue ones)

Do you use algae eaters/cleaners in your tank?

Check your flow in the area of the algae. It usually means you don't have enough flow there. Point a PH at that spot and see if it clears up.

Also, check your nitrates and phosphates. What are those readings?

I would not be the least bid surprised to find these are infact the culprits.

I'm actually ordering several sets of the red to put on my tank for night viewing only. Switch on, view for a while, switch off.

The fish and any life for that matter do not seem to realize they can be seen so the carry on their normal total darkness activities.

It's like having a whole nother tank.

Have about 10 blue led on a 3x400w lighting fixture for three years. They are on when the MH and actinic bulbs are off, which is about 14 hours a day. Never have green algae issue from them. You might be overfeeding. Feeding in a smaller (less) portion and more (larger volume) water change. These leds do not put out lots of light as its name said (low emitting diode).

These leds do not put out lots of light as its name said (low emitting diode).

I always thought it meant Light emitting diode.

I also think these were not meant to be classified as moon lights which may be a different spectrum.

But I could be wrong as is evident by my three teenagers.

You're right Chip. It's an acronym for Light Emitting Diode; however, those are used for moon light.

They don't put out lots of light, not the same bright white LEDs that are used in the Solaris fixture.

And that's all they were intended to be used as moonlight.

Hi

My nitrates are always in the 0-20 range. I do weekly water changes of 15 % and use up 2-4 gallons in to-off water.

I do not have aphosphate kit, but have just added a phosphate remover in a reactor and will let that run for 3 days.

I have about 50 blue and red hermit crabs, 2 emerald crabs, 1 trubo snail, and a few other remaining snails. For some reason, all my snails get eaten by the hermit crabs, even though i bought extra shells and put them in the tank.

I am about to buy 2-3 nudibranches next time I order, since they have a reputation of eating hair algae.

Thanks!
