Highland Reefer April 9, 2008 April 9, 2008 I just bought a Yellow Dwarf Fuzzy Lionfish. He is about 2" long. I've been waiting for one for a while now and am kind of excited like a kid. I am wondering if anyone has experiences in feeding the fuzzy and could share what they feed theirs and any other comments they care to add?
jnguyen4007 April 9, 2008 April 9, 2008 Cliff, Do you know if it had been trained to eat frozen food yet? From what I read about them, they generally don't eat anything that is not moving until they've been trained.
Tri Bui April 9, 2008 April 9, 2008 Cliff, I had those before, very nice fish but hard to make it to eat hand feed food. anyway if it not train to eat frozen food then you can go to the fish store buy some silver fish it likes minos. poke the small fish on a feeding stick and wig at the lion fish pretent it alive, hopefuly it will eat. I train my that way, They will eat when they hunry. only feed them every other day or couples day. Good luck! update us.
jason the filter freak April 9, 2008 April 9, 2008 frozen krill pieces, pieces of silver sides and if that doesn't work try feeding the pieces mixed with mysis while your pumps are funning so that it bobs and jigs though the water. also please post pictures i was looking for one originally but i found they were too hard to find
Highland Reefer April 22, 2008 Author April 22, 2008 (edited) Well, it's been almost two weeks since I got the fuzzy lion. I have about 180 lbs of live rock in my 110 g. tank. I have not seen much of him, he likes to hide in the rocks where I can't see him much. I have not seen him eat yet, which worried me, so I went to my LFS, Scales, and they told me to try some ghost shrimp. So I bought a bunch of them. Hopefully, he is eating them. I hope he will start showing more of himself soon. Any comments are welcomed. I know now from some research that he is not the true Yellow dwarf fuzzy because his body has a lot of red in it. His fins are almost all yellow. I'd like to get a picture but no chance so far. Edited April 22, 2008 by Highland Reefer

gastone April 23, 2008 April 23, 2008 Cliff, guppies can be acclimated to salt water. Another option is to get live bearers like mollies which also can be acclimated to salt water (I've done this before). It isn't a short term solution as you need the fish to eat now, but it may be a longer term solution for fish that won't accimate to dry/frozen food. Garrett.

Garrett, I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but I have read some threads discussing enlarged livers do to feeding fresh water fish to lionfish. What is your take on this issue. I'm looking for a "KISS" solution for feeding my lionfish something until he will come out. Is there a problem with feeding him the ghost shrimp?

Cliff, I really don't know anything about "aggressive" fish (I do however have a female premnas bioceleatus, so I guess we can argue the semantics of aggressive at a later date). I haven't read much up on liver failure as a result of FW feeders, though I am aware that it happens. My thoughts is that if mollies can be acclimated to a SW environment, where they are eating a marine fare (marine algae/hufas/bacterias/whathaveyou), then in essence they would be SW fish and no longer FW, ergo no more liver disease. I doubt it is that cut and dry and I'm sure someone has looked at this. EdKruzel is now a member of our board. You may want to get in touch with him. I have a feeling he would be the one to talk to. FWIW I think any calories are better than nothing at the moment, so if you can get him eating ghost shrimp (or big macs for that matter) I say great. GL Cliff and let us know how it goes. Garrett. gastone April 24, 2008 April 24, 2008 Cliff, I did a quick search on RC and the first thing I came across was this: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.p...highlight=liver Thread started by aformentioned Mr. Kruzel. Just a few posts in the feasibility of using mollies is introduced. I will finish reading the post later. G. Cliff, what if you picked up some peppermint shrimps. They used to be $4 at Roozens. Not a long term option, but they are marine. G.

Highland Reefer April 24, 2008 Author April 24, 2008 (edited) I stopped by my favorite aquaium shop (in my area ) on the way home from my last stop and picked up some feeder guppies. Unfortunately for me, Kathy (ShowCase Aquarium in Wheaton) had a mandarin that had been there for a couple of weeks. She didn't have to twist my arm to much and I bought him also. I turned the lights off when I put the feeder guppies in and the rest of my fish went nuts. Most of them escaped into the rocks. I slowly acclimated the mandarin and let him loose later. I went downstairs and started reading your posts. Good reading, thank you very much. I think I'll continue feeding guppies with some ghost shrimp until he comes out and afterwards as well. If fried chicken and MacDonalds is good enough for me, than guppies should be good enough for a little dwarf lionfish. My hawkfish has a feeder guppy in his little snout which is still alive, this reminds me of the days when I had an arrowanna. Now, I need to get the mandarin eating too. I'm just glutting for punishment. Edited April 24, 2008 by Highland Reefer
