IMHO it depends on a) your tolerance for noise b) the duration of the cycle.

a) They WILL chatter during some of the start ups, just life with an AC motor

b) Almost every failure I've heard about is using "wavemaker" type settings, quick on/off cycles. I have mine on 15 minute cycles, not much of a problem over several months.

Satisfactory for me will be if they function this way for 3+ years..............I have a fairly tough definition of "reliable".

So the short-term tests are positive and short-term test are the only tests around. Hmmmm

I was thinking about 1 hour intervals & not aimed down :)

My opinion is that they'll work fine on such an interval, there's just nothing to go wrong. Maxis are durable little buggers. Short cycles = lots of noise, wear & tear.

Biggest issue I've had to deal with is the development of the mods. Sureflow small props tended to hum, the newer (Dumas) props suffered from balance issues. The current version works fine. I have one 1200 that flat out refuses to spin the larger Sureflow (dumas) prop at all, same pump will spin a Triton mod prop (Dumas).....but only for a couple of weeks & then it quits. It has been spinning the smaller Sureflow w/o any hum for months = go figure. The other 1200 spins any of the props w/o any issue.

Summary - once they're working they're great, getting them that way can be a bit of a trial.

Is the trial worth several hundred? (Tunze ain't cheap) Only you can answer

FWIW - they don't have to be aimed down, front to back for me is 26"..........the water movement is 80% of the vertical column at the front (26") = they move a LOT of water in a very wide pattern (wider than Tunze)

I had a 1200 on an ACIII for over a year and it was fine.

The only chatter I had was from the pin I had in place so it wouldn't start up running sdrawkcab.

OSC 010/010 on/off.

Worked great and will be put back on my new frag tank when I get the chance.

I have two mj1200s modified with the sureflow 1600s in my 75g. They have been running on a Natural Wave timer for two months. They alternate every three minutes. No issues and I only hear a click when they turn on. If you mount them near the top of the tank they will only move a little sand. Flow is great.

The Drs sell the Natural Wave and the MJs as a set so I guess that they may have been tested by the maker.

I have had the modified mj's on a wavemaker as well for about the past 3 months or so and no issues.
