asm g-6 mods.

1 i have an asm g-6 with a gate valve mod and im having trouble with it over skimming once and a while. there several things that are prob. causing it. one is when i installed the mod i never put a tee on top for a vent, im guessing that is my whole problem. im in the process of re-doing several things w/ my system, but another poss problem is the down pipe after the gate is in the water to prevent splashing and noise. is this a problem???? someone told me that it cant be in the water, that it should be slightly above as to not create a suction. someone told me i should put a tee at the bott also so air can travel from top to bottom. makes sense, whats your opinion?

2 im thinking of making my own venturi out of 1'' pvc and drilling + tapping an air fitting into it in order to shorten the venturi. if i do this to all three pumps i can fit the skimmer in a 55 gal plastic drum that i already have. hugging the pumps close to the skimmer will give me approx. 22'' round and i have 23 inside the drum. the only prob i see may be the fact that the orig. venturi is tappered on the inside. is that tapper imporntant. can i use 1'' pvc in place, and do you see any other potental problems with that????

3 does it matter how much flow i feed the skimmer with???? i have a gen x pcx 70 with a gph of 1537 and max head of 31' that is feeding my chiller i was thinking of sending the water from my sump to the chiller which is high on a shelf above the tank @ about 7.5 feet high, and sending the return directly into the top of the skimmer, and a bulkhead out of the drum back to the sump. there will be a a pretty big folw loss do to the height and all of the turns in the loop. do you think this is sufficant???

4 where can i find a new collection cup for the g-6??, having trouble finding one.

5 do you recomend the mesh mod, i have some teeth missing and was thinking about it. i herd that the mesh doesnt last too long. also herd that it wears the impeller assy. alot faster. whats your opinion?

1. You should add the T and don't fully submerge the exit pipe.

2. The taper is important. It is what makes the venturi work.

3. The amount of flow through is important, but I have no idea what is recommended for a G-6. Experimentation might be a good idea here.

4. No idea. Sorry.

5. IMO the improvement in performance of the mesh vs needle wheel is worth it even if if does mean you have to replace the impeller more often, or the whole pump for that matter.

I had a ASM G5 and I saw some dramatic improvements in skimmate production after I recirced both the Sedra pumps. I also noticed that I had to clean the pumps alot less since there wasn't all kinds of crap getting stuck inside the needlewheels and affecting bubble production. I fed the skimmer with a standard maxijet 1200 and used the grate on the MJ to make sure no snails or other big stuff got inside the skimmer to gunk up the needlewheels. I was very happy with the result. I never did the mesh-mod on the pumps, but I wished that I had. I now have a GSA skimmer and a deltec going head to head and the much smaller GSA skimmer is keeping up with the twice-as-expensive Deltec, which I attribute to the meshwheel in the GSA pump.

For your answer to #1, I would go here: http://home.nc.rr.com/stockmanreef/reverse_durso.htm

and see if this could help. I used these on the flow from my tank to my sump and silenced the noise quite a bit.

I would definitely put the tee on the outflow of the skimmer too. I really think that will help your overflow situations.

I did the mesh wheel mod on my skimmer 3.5 months ago (LINK)

Just yesterday I opened up the pump for the first time to clean it. There was *nothing* gummed in the mesh to clean and the mesh was in perfect condition. I'm still very satisfied. Can't speak to wether the impeller is wearing faster.

I also did the recirc mod. Didn't notice much (anything).
