dandy7200 February 3, 2008 February 3, 2008 Very nice tank Mike. Do you have any old pictures you can post so we can see the progression of your reef?
Boret February 3, 2008 February 3, 2008 Is that Vulture feeding or Vulture Fragging??? Very funny indeed!!! I am very impress with the tank. Congratulations, it has to be wonderful to stand there and observe everything for hours!!! I spend a lot of time in front of mine and I have nothing!! ha ha ha ha With all this frag trading talk and a few days away from the big meeting (my first) I have a question. How do we newbies get to do any of the frag trading? I am almost certain that there is nothing in my tank that anyone might want, mainly because it is little frags all that I have. Also, I really don't know how to even frag any of the things I have in the tank. I have received a few frags from WAMAS members (thank you very much guys), and so far all of them seem alive. In the future I will be more than happy to spread the wealth of frags... but I just feel like I am missing on the opportunity to add coral diversity to my tank. Sorry for the rant, it is probably not even the proper place to post it.... Again, great job with the tank!! Later, Boret
rottloverr February 3, 2008 February 3, 2008 (edited) Truly stunning tank. Very nice. With the size of those corals and because of how close they are. How often to you have to trim? I've been diving in all the major tourist traps in the general area except Hawaii. Cayman and Cozumel were very nice. I highly recommend St Lucia, it is one of the furthest island south in the Caribbean. They have a breath reef wall you can dive. Cheers, Sean Edited February 3, 2008 by rottloverr
OUsnakebyte February 3, 2008 February 3, 2008 (edited) Very nice tank Mike. Do you have any old pictures you can post so we can see the progression of your reef? Hmmm... let me see what I can dig up... Alrighty - here we go. These first few are from 2004-2005ish. This is when my tank use to be a 75 gallon. Full tank shot: Left side - formosa is dead center, at the top: Right side: Top shot from left - note the formosa in the middle which now dominates the left side of the 120: Top shot from right - mostly caps which no longer exist... darn nudibranchs Did I also mention that I battled pinched mantle? Yup, and I lost all 5 - count 'em - 5 clams. There is a quarantine message floating around here somehwere... Here are some shots of the caps that have gone the way of the dodo - all were about 10" or more when they began their decline (the green w/ purple rim can be seen in the top shot above): Purple: King Midas atop his purple cap: Orange: Hispida: Then, in late fall of 2005 I moved from Adam's Morgan to Cleveland Park - where I still live today. I took the moving opportunity to also upgrade to the current 120. The move must have stressed the carpet, so she spawned: Unless they are hermaphroditic and release egg/sperm bundles, I say 'she' b/c there were eggs everywhere. The tank looks in disarray b/c this is literally taking place on moving day. I did not even have time to aquascape and place corals... The long tentacle tried to eat a thermometer; it was madness: The only constants that have been with me through the years are the two anemones (LTA and carpet) and those two GSM clowns (Big momma and 'Lil B). The other is that now-very-large formosa colony on the left side. If I lost those to some sort of tank crash, I'd probably throw in the towel. Cheers Mike Edited February 3, 2008 by OUsnakebyte
OUsnakebyte February 4, 2008 February 4, 2008 (edited) curious to know what your water change schedule is like? Yeah... I'm actually due - missed January. I try to do a change (30 gallon trash can) once a month, though it doesn't always happen. I change halides every 10 months and actinics (4 bulbs) about every 1.5 years; run carbon pretty much all the time. The previous thread of pictures sent me looking for more old pics. Here is a series from February of 2004. Note the massive colt coral in the middle. I donated that one to the wamas frag fest the following October; no more xenia, no more gorgonian - no more softies in general (save GSPs and zoas). Funny to see all my sps corals in their infancy - some are not even there yet... Right side - 2-4-04: Left side - 2-4-04: Angle shot - 2-4-04: Cheers Mike Edited February 4, 2008 by OUsnakebyte
Leishman February 6, 2008 February 6, 2008 I saw this reef in person last night, thanks Mike. It has to be TOTM soon. The pics in this thread do not catch the colors of Mike's amazing collection of corals. I took one pic (with my phone) of the blue carpet..... Thanks again Mike, and thanks for the frags
rsarvis February 6, 2008 February 6, 2008 The long tentacle tried to eat a thermometer; it was madness: Wow, that is bordering on inappropriate!!
OUsnakebyte February 7, 2008 February 7, 2008 I saw this reef in person last night, thanks Mike. It has to be TOTM soon. Thanks again Mike, and thanks for the frags You are quite welcome! And yup, it's official. The iPhone has to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen... Wow, that is bordering on inappropriate!! Shhhh! You'll offend the anemone. It finally decided later that night that it didn't like the taste of glass, so it yucked it back up. I don't own that thermometer anymore...
