toastiireefs January 27, 2008 January 27, 2008 I was just curious how school tanks work, how are they taken care of, etc. because i was thinking about setting a tank up in the middle or elementry school (my school is under renovation) for my senior project if i get the OK. I think school tanks are great! especially if they were for younger kids (i fear what the highschoolers would do to the poor little fishies), i think it is very educational for them, because a lot of people have never been to an aquarium, or know about the wonders of the sea, (I know people who live in california who didnt think seahorses truely exsisted!! CALIFORNIA! with all their beautiful aquariums!) Anyways i feel like im going off on a tangent, But thanks in advance for any advice/ comments/ explainations! -Sara
davelin315 January 27, 2008 January 27, 2008 Sara, give me a call when you get a chance and I can fill you in. There's an awful lot to setting up a school tank and it can go many different ways.
davelin315 January 27, 2008 January 27, 2008 Just don't try to set up a shark tank. I'm still pretty bitter at that person who told me no... not too impressed with their educational vision... have had nothing but hassles and battles with that person since that incident. Lesson learned, don't ask.

Lesson learned, don't ask. haha dont worry and yea sure i can give you a call! just PM me your number and i'll call hmm.. would it be better to get the ok before or after i'm filled in. I might also (if its at the elementry school) want to try and work in a 3day -5day unit on the ocean and reefs.... or maybe i should do that for the middle schoolers... hmmm this would have to be thought about and planned... well i mean is for my senior project if it all works out!! :D haha im rambling
toastiireefs January 28, 2008 Author January 28, 2008 So far - that sounds great to me! That would be a very cool project. See you tomorrow - Ms. Simmons ________________________________ From: Sara [mailto: Sent: Sun 1/27/2008 8:35 PM To: XX Subject: Senior Project Ms. Simmons, Hi, My name is Sara E and I'm in 11th grade. I had been thinking about senior projects and I had no clue what I could do for it. But I am part of this "club/organization" called WAMAS (Washington DC Area Marine Aquarist Society) and they have a little donation program for equipment and live stock for school aquariums. So what I was thinking is that if I could get the "O.K." from Wyngate or North Bethesda (or I guess any elementary/ middle school in the area) I could set up, hopefully with the help of another person, a little reef aquaria there. I was also thinking that if I did that I could write a mini unit to possibly teach the kids a little about the ocean, coral reefs, conservation etc. I think that having an aquarium in a place that kids generally go every day is an incredible learning experience, especially because not everyone has the privilege to go to a public aquarium, though hopefully everyone has at least had the chance to go to the zoo (which not everyone has that privilege to have a zoo so accessible, and FREE!)! I personally am very interested in marine biology and have two aquariums at home, a reef and a dwarf seahorse tank, and work at the invertebrate exhibit at the Zoo. So basically I was just wondering if this would be an appropriate project to do for next year. I was also going to come in and talk to you personally, however I feel it is sometimes easier to get all your thoughts down easier when you write it out (and I just couldn't wait till monday!!!). Thank you for your time, Sara E YAY! obstical one accomplished!

davelin315 January 28, 2008 January 28, 2008 SHE probably thinks that she does that every single day...
vaironman January 28, 2008 January 28, 2008 (edited) Dave, I am thinking of setting up a school tank in my daughter kindergarden school. Can we get together and have you show me the rope on how to approach the school in doing this for the little kids. Should I talk to dbarco since I understand he is in charge for the loudoun county schools. Thanks, KLee Better yet, when you give your lecture to Sarah on how to setup a school tank, let me know and I'll sit in to listen also. Educate two persons with one lesson, save you some precious time for your family. Edited January 28, 2008 by vaironman
