tygger November 22, 2007 Share November 22, 2007 The mushroom is attached to a turbo snail shell. I'm trying to figure out what that squiggly thing is directly between the mushroom and shell. I've never really looked underneath a mushroom before, is that just part of it?
emissary November 22, 2007 Share November 22, 2007 Looks more like snail eggs than the stalk of the mushroom.

davelin315 November 22, 2007 Share November 22, 2007 Guts. That's a defense mechanism for when it is attacked or injured. Most mushrooms will spew out their insides and let the attacker eat those so it hopefully leaves them mostly intact and alive. It's the same defense mechanism that cucumbers have (when I'm in tropical locales I have always enjoyed poking the cucumbers to see them regurgitate their intestines and have fish come and eat them), doesn't hurt them at all. zotzer November 22, 2007 Share November 22, 2007 BTW, Bob gave me a couple of those blue/purple mushrooms and they are some of my favorites. They have the neatest color and texture. Nice shrooms! Tracy
