We need to dose with idoine, I think, 'cause we had a shrimp molt and we have the BTA which needs it.

So, I guess it goes into the sump...

1. What brand?

2. How often? There's no test, right?

3. How much? We have an 80g display and a 60g sump

Hi fish wife,

i would say......if your changing water every 2 weeks and you dont have carbon running 24/7 you shouldnt need it......i do however put a half dose in periodically (sp?) since i do have an abundance of mobile inverts in my 20 gallon tank and soft corals.

i may even be wrong for doing this but i have not seen any ill effects.....

Hmmm. Carbon running. We don't. Given our setup, where and how would we run carbon?

We've been so busy getting the tank up and going that we didn't yet think about maintenance. I guess we're coming up on about three weeks with "all systems go" so we should...

Remind me about carbon along with idoine, folks, please?

What else should we be remembering? We're getting a calcium test tonight... so it's a good day to make a list.

Be very careful dosing I. I agree with Bryan. With regular water changes you should not have to dose it. If you do decide to don't dose if you dont plan to test for it.

I agree with Chris. As the saying goes, "if you don't test for it, don't use it"

my lfs tricked me into buying the ESV Iodine and Stronium so i've been dosing 1ml once a week on Mondays. I can't remember what she said it was good for... i think it was something along the lines that it helps my shrimp molt.

OK; thanks.

About carbon... How? In a canister filter or something?

I run carbon in my canister for 2 week each month. I think its called Black Diamond carbon. Or you can always use the seaclem phosphate and carbon combo those were pretty good as well.

So... you set up your cannister filter and turn it on two weeks a month...? THEN? Do you clean it out and repack it for the next time you turn it on?

Probably the "best" way to run it is to use a media reactor - very similar to your skimmer or a kalk mixer, and Dan sells media reactors as well. You can also put it in a media bag and drop it in your sump somewhere - this is how most of us start with it. The media bag is passive, the reactor is active so obviously the reactor is better but it's another $100. As far as iodine, there are tests - Salifert makes one - if you're not testing for it, don't dose it. Iodine is extremely toxic and is one of the trace elements included in your salt mix. Regular water changes should be sufficient to keep the levels appropriate - certainly not something you should worry about for a while.

I just keep it running without any carbon or other substrate in the compartments. My Ecco Eheim is my main filteration system. I don't have wet/dry or sump. Soo in order to keep my bio filteration i leave a eheim sponge in the canister.

Next question would be why canister instead of wet/dry ... the lfs told me that wet/dry were bad (again I was fooled by them) sighs
