SteveM October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 Anyone know what this brown stuff is that seems to be growing in my tank. All my water conditions have been unchanged for several months (everything is good) but over the past week or so I have noticed this stuff. For some reason it started after I put a Tunze in and got more flow. What ever it is is there a way to get rid of it?

I can't tell from the picture, but does it also have what looks like small bubbles or embryos attached to it? If it does, it might be cyano. Or from what other folks been telling, that's what cyano looks like. James
Nitro Junkie October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 I'm not sure what it is but I have a piece of live rock that is covered with nice coraline. I recently moved around a maxijet and a small part of the rock is in the direct flow path of the maxi jet. This part of the rock has gone from purple to brown. It doesnt seem to be spreading , its almost like the flow is killing or burning the coraline for lack of a better term.
extreme_tooth_decay October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 I would normally think that brown indicates diatoms? Seems less likely with an established tank though.
ReeferMan October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 i believe this is caused by higher phosphates but i have never seen it become out of control where it causes issues.
jnguyen4007 October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 I have a phosban reactor running in mine right now, and the problem is still there. So I don't know if phosphate is the cause of this thing if it is the same problem as mine. This brown dusty stuff cover just about everything including rocks and corals. On a daily basis, I have to use a turkey baster to blast them off of my pumps and rocks and corals. James
HowardofNOVA October 22, 2007 October 22, 2007 Steve, How old are your bulbs? Checked the PAR Levels if you did a while back and see how much they have dropped? Possibly time for a change? When I was testing bulbs in the past, they average a 15% decrease over a 4 month period.

If I replace them will it clear this up you think??
