FishWife September 29, 2007 September 29, 2007 Anyone had real-life experience with Berghia Nudibranchs? We have about 100 lbs. of rock in our 28 gallon holding tank... if they're a good idea, how many do we need? And, where's a good place to get them? TIA, as usual. We'd be lost without you all!
jamesbuf September 29, 2007 September 29, 2007 I had luck with peppermint shrimps. I bought 5 of them on sale and they cleaned out all of them in my tank within a week. I've read plenty of people not having any luck with them though, but most only buy 1 or 2 at most. I know F&F had them 3 for $15. Well worth $30 to get 6 of them in hopes of having at least one of them that will eat aptasia.
zotzer September 29, 2007 September 29, 2007 Second vote for the peppermint shrimp. I had one rock that had several teeny tiny aiptasia on it. Now there are none. And I never see them (two of them....maybe now only one) unless it's feeding time. They are really funny!!! Tracy
davelin315 September 29, 2007 September 29, 2007 Berghias are excellent aiptasia eaters and the only thing out there that is guaranteed to eat only aiptasia. The problem with them is that to be truly efficient and clear your system you need to keep them separate and cycle your rock in and out. Some people will stick them into their systems but you run the risk of losing them and also of them not getting to all of the aiptasia. They have a tendency to breed and eat but then their population begins to die off as your aiptasia numbers get lower and then you may end up in a situation where you don't have enough aiptasia to sustain the population and then it crashes. Go into the education forum and do a search for the thread I put up before on them as we used them in school.
B-Fit September 29, 2007 September 29, 2007 Go with the Peppermint Shrimp. I had a bad case about 2 months ago and I did about 4 rounds of injecting them with kalk and added 8 Peppermint Shrimp. Took care of all the aiptasia and now I'm looking for some to grow Good luck
