jamesbuf August 12, 2007 August 12, 2007 I was looking to get a redundant float switch that also cuts off the pump in case of the first float fails. I've had this happen already and was lucky there was only so much RO/DI water in my reserve tank. I was looking at this one: http://www.autotopoff.com/products/DS1/index.htm Does anyone have experience with this company, or know someone that does? Any feedback offered is much appreciated.

dschflier August 12, 2007 August 12, 2007 I almost had an overflow of my sump when my auto-top off switch was held up. I was very fortunate nothing was killed but I think if it would have gone on for a couple of hours more it would have been devastating. I have a switch very similer to what that site describes. I got it from the last tank I bought but have not set it up yet. I plan on doing that as well. I think it is a great backup.

YBeNormal August 12, 2007 August 12, 2007 A backup float switch is critical but even more important is to resist the urge to connect your auto-topoff directly to your RO/DI unit or to an extra large FW supply. I use a 7g topoff container, providing enough water for several days of topoff. Even if the ATO stuck in the "on" position and dumped all 7g in at once, the impact on the tank would be minimal. The only drawback is that I have to refill the container every few days--about 30 seconds of effort. Remember, even if you have a second float valve, they both operate off of the same relay circuitry and relays can (and do) stick in the "on" position so you still have at least one single point of failure. Plan for this unlikely but all too common scenario and eliminate one more potential for disaster.

tygger August 13, 2007 August 13, 2007 tygger, Have you tested the backup switch recently to see if it still works? fab Haven't tested this month, but I usually just use my hand to lift up the switch to see if it stops the pump. Mine is connected to a 10g reservoir via a dosing pump.
