Guest han012 August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 i'm planning on picking up 2 stalks of xenia coral tonight. after researching it, i've read that i should use iodine supplementation because it might "crash." than i researched iodine supps & i read that it's not good & not necessary. anybody out there that have a xenia ever use iodine supps? do you think it's necessary? if so, which brand did you use?
jamal August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 you dont need iodine supplementation for xenia and if your tank is doing well you will find that it is somewhat invasive. stick it in and let it roll

I have xenia and don't supplement with iodine; it still grows like crazy. But I'd be interested in hearing if others are having a different experience, and if you don't mind my expanding your thread slightly, I'd like to hear more about people's iodine supplementation habits more generally (w.r.t. anemones, corals, etc., etc.).
jason the filter freak August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 If you have a good salt, IO in most cases I wouldn't worry at all about supplementing Iodine... most people who I've spoken to who have been in the hobby for a long time don't dose anything in they're tank that they can't readily test.

fab August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 do you remember where you read that iodine supplemetation was 'necessary' or even 'desirable?' fab
trble81 August 8, 2007 August 8, 2007 I agree with the other posts. When I was buying a peppermint shrimp for my tank, Live Aquaria had said that it's best to supplement with iodine to help with the molting. After asking the staff at Scales, they said that as long as you do regular water changes, you'll be fine (i.e., that's why salt costs what it costs, it's loaded with trace elements). Save your money and stick with your water changes. --Mike
