skimmer question

Do you clean your skimmer?? I know to clean the cup but is it possible to clean the inside of the skimmer? There seems to be alot of 'gunk' inside of the thing.... just seems to me the inside should be clean or else you'lll just be introducing 'stuff' back in your tank that you may be trying to get rid of.... and if it is possible to clean the inside, just how do you do it??? mine won't come apart :(

I clean the skimmer cup and neck every week or so. The body of the skimmer only gets cleaned every few months using hot water, maybe some vinegar, a bottle brush, a wash cloth and whatever else I can find that will reach into the recessed areas. I don't try to get the body of the skimmer spotless, just try to remove any built up gunk.

After you clean...remember it will take a while for the skimmer to get back up to "speed" and froth away...
