Rascal September 9, 2007 September 9, 2007 but how do you keep the rocks from falling down if a fish were to swim heavily near it?? or hit it or something.. or an anemone walking around how do they stay put- even if they dont move in the position they are in how can you guarentee that they wont fall later Gravity. Like Lanman said -- just make sure everything is stable. If you are worried about it, keep re-aquascaping until everything fits. Make sure the rocks on the bottom won't shift, even if this means pushing them down through the substrate so they are just supported by the bottom of the tank, and then keep working with the rest of the rocks until they all fit together. Fish are not going to knock your rocks over. They are actually pretty good swimmers, really. They tend not to bump into things unless you are dosing vodka for nitrate reduction. Things that might cause rockslides: urchings, large turbo snails, and if your rocks aren't resting on the bottom, anything that might tunnel under them. In this case though, epoxy isn't likely to help.
treesprite September 9, 2007 September 9, 2007 (edited) hmm so i added a bit of phosguard (by seachem) (supposed to be a PO4 and sillicate control... but) my hair algae hasnt changed- my calerpa is fading and cyno is reappearing... hmm i didnt add the whole dosage of it to let the life get used to it i washed it off - i thought pretty well... should i add more? my emerald crab is chompiing away- i might get more of them they are kinda cute I might get one or 2 more myself... they really are cute I just looked at descriptions on several different sites and it's wild how many different descriptions there are - one said they get to 4", some say 1, some say 2, some say they are shiny and look shiny and others do not. He lives in my sump, because it looked like he was killing snails - even when I was spot feeding him. bob
zotzer September 9, 2007 September 9, 2007 He lives in my sump, because it looked like he was killing snails - even when I was spot feeding him. That's why I am going to do my best to stick with a snail-only CUC. Crabs are opportunists, and if I can avoid them, I will! LOL They seem to be doing an okay job so far, but time to get more trochus. Tracy
toastiireefs September 9, 2007 Author September 9, 2007 mine is like 2in ish light-dark green- (really cute) and a bit shinyish mostly dull- but i still have the hair algae problem i've just been pulling it out...
toastiireefs September 10, 2007 Author September 10, 2007 so how to get rid of cyno once and for all? it was gone for the longest time... but its back now..
YBeNormal September 11, 2007 September 11, 2007 so how to get rid of cyno once and for all? Drain the tank? Seriously though, you need to focus on what is causing or allow it to grow in the first place rather than how to get rid of it. Make conditions inhospitable for it and it will be gone permanently. Increased or improved flow and clean water are #1 candidates on the list other than removing as much of the cyano as posible by hand or by siphoning.

toastiireefs September 26, 2007 Author September 26, 2007 (edited) ok so now cyano is gone- HA retreating i uped the flow and temporarily removed EVERYthing that could harbor nitrates- but some of it is gonna go back on.. just i'll clean it more often sooooo i think i might get a pair of erectus seahorses instead of a pair of clowns.. i saw the most beautiful pictures of some that a guy on seahorse.org is selling (many ppl have bought from him and they are CB:)) and get only the more peacful of my fish choices- im still gonna get i think a lawnmower benny- or bicolor. still not positive yet- Do you guys notice any agression from them toward other docile fish? Id also only do softies (coral wise) i'll prolly fill my tank with ricordia and zoas maybe some other soft nice sweet guys that are seahorse compatible so id get 2 erectus 1 lawnmower prolly still a fire fish or pearly jaw and are there any other peacful water colum swimming fish? I only know what I've read, and you're the one who keeps seahorses, but my understanding is that there are only a few kinds of fish that can be kept with them, and that corals can't be kept with them. Someone will have to correct me if what I've read is incorrect.

zotzer September 27, 2007 September 27, 2007 I've heard that lawnmowers can be territorial, but I have to say that my orange spot is totally peaceful. He does zip around alot, and I am not sure how that will go over with seahorses. I think both the tailspot blenny and barnacle blenny are teeny, so if they zip around like my blenny does, they won't leave such a wake in their trail. LOL I think most people don't keep hard corals with seahorses, simply because they like much more flow than people feel is compatible with seahorses. I don't think low-lying softies should be a problem, from what I have read. tracy
toastiireefs September 27, 2007 Author September 27, 2007 that is a lot of money just for a couple seahorses yea!!! but thats on the lower scale of pricing too but like shipping is unbelievable 55per horse plus 72$ ship
treesprite September 27, 2007 September 27, 2007 yea!!! but thats on the lower scale of pricing too but like shipping is unbelievable 55per horse plus 72$ ship Good lord, why is shipping so high? Do they do some kind of specialized seahorse packaging or something?
lanman September 27, 2007 September 27, 2007 Good lord, why is shipping so high? Do they do some kind of specialized seahorse packaging or something? Oh, you know Sara... she just HAD to get the accessory kit. That miniature saddle costs more than the seahorse itself! bob
toastiireefs September 27, 2007 Author September 27, 2007 Oh, you know Sara... she just HAD to get the accessory kit. That miniature saddle costs more than the seahorse itself! bob hahaha well its a lot of water weight for 2 horses.. and its from florida? i feel like that shouldnt affect it though and just cuz of t he pricing (unless i get a steady job SOON) i wont be able to afford it ...... actually thats not true one 12hr night shift of the kinda job i got now will give me more than enough to get them but still its a lot to spend
toastiireefs September 28, 2007 Author September 28, 2007 hmmm i dont think i should go with the seahorses-- i wont beable to keep the amount of "diversity" i want in my tank-- for a communities tank- i wont be able to keep the fish i want- too risky some LSP is ok with seahorses like candycane and sun corals, but doesnt matter- just generally i think clowns in the long run are a better idea! and getting those CB at a LFS isnt that hard- (i believe) or i might order online with any of my fish so by next sunday (not tomorrow) i should have some sort of herbivore blenny! bicolor/ lawnmower/ or tailspot depends whats in stock
toastiireefs October 1, 2007 Author October 1, 2007 so im def not doing the horses but any last comments on bennies before the weekend- should i get some mysis as well to suplement their diet with or just vegie matter?. wha place should i get it at? i was thinking scales?
wreck October 1, 2007 October 1, 2007 I like Aquarium One and it's close to Bethesda, closest place to me besides Congressional. Aquarium One is a small place, but prices are good and they give WAMAS members 10% discount also the staff is always helpful. I don't know what blennies they have in stock, but the scooter blenny I got a few a months ago was healthy from the beginning and thriving in my tank. so im def not doing the horses but any last comments on bennies before the weekend- should i get some mysis as well to suplement their diet with or just vegie matter?. wha place should i get it at? i was thinking scales?
