I was kidding about the limp. The foot is only used for attachment if desired by the clam. It's not a "walking foot" and as Troll mentioned, they propel about by hydrolics. If you can see gills from underside of the clam - sort of see through - according to Barry it's a goaner. 2 of my 4 clams do not attach themselves, but if you turn them upside-down you can see a retracted foot.
