dhoch February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 Ok so I purchased a couple of Mag 24s online here (one coming as not working)... THe working one is now in great shape cleaned and primed ready for use. The broken one it seems it had not been cleaned in a long time and the magnet shaft had stuck in the tube.... So I soaked it for like 3 days in a vinegar solution and was able to pull out PART of the magnet (the top two parts came out, but the bottom two stayed in there)... any suggestions on how to get the remaining magnets out? I can take pics if that will help... Dave
iceman February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 Did the shaft come out? If so, could you use small forceps to reach in there and grasp the hole and pull it out? I usually have to do this to get my impellar out of my deltec skimmer pump when I clean the pump and the shaft comes out. I have several sets of small forceps, I'm sure one will work.
dhoch February 24, 2007 Author February 24, 2007 It's a pretty big magnet... you would need some big forceps... I've tried with pliers, but it's really hard to get out. (I've allready destroyed the impeller so I'll need a new one, but I would like to salvage the pump if at all possible). Dave
madmax7774 February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 not being able to see whats actually going on, how about drilling a small hole into the magnet. screw small machine screw into the hole and use it as handle to pull on the magnet and possible get the magnet out. Or use a small flat screwdriver as a chisel and break the magnet into small pieces to be extracted with needle nose pliers. Or detonate a very small harmonically balanced specifically shaped charge of micro explosives which will cause the magnet to desintegrate.
dhoch February 24, 2007 Author February 24, 2007 Actually the screw idea is pretty good... but if I could only get explosives :) Dave
trble81 February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 I could see the news story now... Man looses grip with reality and hand when using explosives to remove pump parts in his home...
jason the filter freak February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 What about a larger magnet with oppsite polarity to disrupt the magnetic feild of the one in the mag drive?
NRehman February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 Dave, You might be able to use a rod with some superglue. Carefully attach the rod and magnet and pull out perpendicular the motor (I think sheer stress will separate the join, but a direct pull should hold the two together).
flowerseller February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 You remember that muratic acid I gave you at the water testing meeting? Pour some in and let it do it's thing.
Bendalat February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 Dave, Did you buy them from me? Yes, one of them has not been using for 2 years. That why I listed as buy one get one free, and asked you to stop by to test them out first. Sorry about that. You can return them to me anytime Dave. Khanh
dhoch February 24, 2007 Author February 24, 2007 Khanh... I expected that one wasn't working... As I said if I can get the magnet out I just need to buy a new impeller (and a new cover)... no big deal at all... Chip I've got it soaking in the vinegar again... after a couple more days I'll give it another shot (I've still got your acid so I'll try that next Dave
YBeNormal February 24, 2007 February 24, 2007 Dave, I had the same problem with an cheap old pump that I pulled from my sump and failed to clean before storing it away. I tried soaking it vinegar and muriatic acid for several days each and never was able to get the impeller out. I finally decided it wasn't worth the effort and threw the pump away. Hope you have better luck with this one.
