reefs.org a flame site

Recommended Posts

Reefs.org has slowly degraded to a site where the open discussion of ideas is impossible.  How do we fix this problem, when so much information could be shared?  Novice hobbiests get flamed out before they have a chance to learn anything.

It might be that a boycott is in order.

Ideas, sentiments are welcome.

There is still good discussion going on at reefs.org, but I will admit that the signal to noise ratio is much higher at reef central than reefs.org.

There is little you can do about it.  It is a self healing situation though.  As the noise goes up, fewer people will post.  As fewer people post, the noise will go down.  This is just one of the fundamental laws of Internet newsgroups, or in this case, BBs.

If you see novices getting flamed out of the boards, feel free to invite them to our boards.  I'm not saying they won't get flamed here, but I think we have a pretty tolerant group here.

James is pretty open to suggestions, so if you send him some email he might post something about it.

I don't even look at Reefs.org much any more. Everytime I go there and look at "view thread since last visit" I get 90% off topic threads that have absolutely nothing to do with reefing. It's very sad because IMO it used to be an excellent site.

If you stick to the general forum, you get mostly reef related items.  The sump is another story - that's where most of the traffic is.  It's kinda of a like high school - {squat} is cool, everyone else isn't.  If I see another thirty posts about she-goat I will scream.  Unfortunately, the last time I was there  the "clique" invaded the general forum and the noise went way up.  Haven't been back since.  Oh well....

snap,

It's nice to see that have turned this board into a flame site with your posts about MS.  :(

I thought you were all about sharing information about reefkeeping in a way that others can learn.  Instead, I see nothing but negative comments & flames from you, all because you disagreed with the prices at a LFS.

As for your planned boycott of reefs.orgy, you DON'T speak for me.  I can make up my own mind about what sites I will surf.

Perhaps in the future you should engage the safety locks on your heat seeking missiles, and try a more civil tone if you want people to have an open flame free discussion.

Gator,

I don't agree with Snapper's call to boycott reefs.org, however I disagree even stronger with your reply.  I don't think Snapper was attempting to speak for you, or anyone else.  He was voicing an opinion and invited comments and suggestions.  If that is not an open forum, I don't know what is.

My opinion of flaming is not different opinions, but personal attacks.  In this thread, who is flaming whom?

Gator,

Since you chose to address this in a public forum and not via PM or email I will respond in kind.

Since I've already "been warned" what else do I have to lose...

I would not try to speak for you or any other of the imperial officers of the board.

My sole intent at the onset of the MS discussion was to illicit ideas to better affect their service to us, the club.  And to tap the sentiment of the members.

My post in the member's forum covers my opinion on the inappropriatness of former posts and that a vendor was allowed to access the member's forum, so I won't go into that here.

I do not wish this to be a flame site.  I will not, however, let posts like your last go unanswered.

I'm glad a little dust has been churned up.  At least this board has received more posts in a day than it gets in an average month...

I'll bet you regret hitting the submit button on that last reply.  It's okay, I forgive you for it and all the other aministrative "oops" that occur on this board.

We can finish this in person at the next meeting.  If you so desire to repond, please have the class and decorum to do so in a closed setting like email or PM.

You know, I don't even know either one of you, but OK, whatever and whoever said it, drop it. I think we all left high school behind a while back. You all made your points, got a little heated, and said more than necessary. So, now that we have vented and feel better, why don't we just wish each other a happy new year and wish the best of sentiments to each other. Without snappy or sarcastic remarks would be nice :D  :D  :D

Leave any animosity behind and welcome a new year with an open heart, and open mind, and an open wallet to toss all the money you have into your tank :D  :D

Have a Happy New year,

Alberto
