  1. I did get one email and the PM here. I just replied. Thanks for the help. Since I still, for whatever reason it may be, cannot see the last line at the top, could you post a link to the powerbuy? I want to see what is being put up so far. Thanks, Alberto
  2. Nope, no little scroll bar either. I actually tried at work the other day after I posted the original thread and I couldn't see it there either. Oh well, if you could also send me a link to the powerbuy I will save it too. Alberto
  3. Thanks for the reply. When I go to the MACNA page, it has osme tabs at the top, hoever, I think there are a few that cannot be seen for some reason. So far the ones I can see are: home hotel exhibitors visit DC Conference committee speaker registration sponsor banner I tried 3 different web browsers thinking maybe the site was not configured to some others: netscape, IE, and and MAC's Safari. They all look the same. Alberto
  4. I had to log in here i hopes to get some answers as I and others have not been able to get them anywhere else. It seems the MACNA web page has a menu of tabs on top, but there are you cannot see or access. When is the schedule of talk and events going to be posted? I know of at least 1 dozen people that are waiting for it to come out so they can make proper plane ticket arrangements, me included. I know that as the speakers commit and others back out, that schedule may change, but a rough draft or guide would be nice. Also, is there a person in particular that is answering the emails about the registration, hotels, etc? I had sent emails myself several times asking about the registration and such with no replies for months. So have tons of other people I know. One was even a vemdor trying to sell corals! He finally gave up and won't even be coming after planning and setting this up for a year. I am not writing this up as a complain or plain @$%#&ing, but rather to get answers from someone as I may not be reaching the right person at all. Thanks, Alberto
  5. There is a guy in the CMAS board named NAGA that used to do acrylic work for a company somewhere around the area. He knows the better prices and places to get any acrylic piece. Send him an e-mail via the www.cmas-md.org board or go to www.reefcentral.com and do a search under his name. Then, send him an email. Alberto ???

    The LFS

Gav: Don't be discouraged. LFS are out to make money, some more than others, and nothing else. Frags are not seen as profitable bussiness for them despite the logical reasons given above. I went through the exact same thing a few months back. I decided not to even bother with them ever again. I found the best places to get frags is from local guys, some of which have some outstanding specimens and lots of hard to come by stuff. The yw ill always be your best asset. On the same token, they are also your best bet to unload some frags in the future as stuff grows in your tank. Coming from someone that has a significant investment in equipment and livestock as well as maintenance, seling frags here and there is attractive to help curtail some of the costs. However, I rather flush any frags down the toilet than to sell them to any store after what they told me when I tried the first time. Pretty much the same experience as yours. That is another reason why I almost never buy anything from LFS, alive or not.99% of the time, I mail order them. That is just my personal beef, so please don't be influenced by my issues and internal anger. My therapist in working on those :D :D If you have frags, post them here and on the CMAS site. Bring them to the meetings and see if anyone is interested. Most times is best make arrangements before hand. Good luck ::
  7. I bought 200 lb of LR from Dr. Mac a while back. Trust me on this one. Buy the uncured fiji and don't waste your money on kaelini or the other more expensive stuff. It is all about the same unless you want giant pieces. If that is the case, get the kaelini. Mine was uncured and did not stink the house up. Cover up the place where the skimmer output will be or where the scumm will collect. That is all. 3 weeks max and you'll ahve it all cured. Don't use the light for more than 4 hours per day, but do use it. Also, use kalk for top off if possible. That is all you need.
  8. I have one. I had to replace the tubing a while back. I could only find it at Spectrapure too, but premium aquatics or marine depot will order them for you and have them drop ship it. It cost like $25 of I remember right. Before you replace it, take it out and wipe it clean with rubbing alcohol. Do the same for the other parts in the head mechanism. The rollers you can wash with some citrus based soap until they are clean again. That will buy you some time. I tried looking around at home depot and other places and never found anything even similar. Alberto
  9. Hey now, my tank is big too and all my other "things" are big too. I mean, my reactor, my skimmer, etc :: :: :: That is one awesome tank though. Too bad he does not have more acros and montis on it. :( Alberto :D
  10. Check this out. http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22172&highlight=
  11. Thanks guys and gals........ It is all better now that I have redone things. Will post pictures later. Alberto
  12. RobZ: Actually, there is something I need you could help me. I think if I get a frag of your A. efflourecent, blue A. tortuosa, a rose anemone, amd a couple of other frags, I will feel much better and make the pipes and sump equipment safer too. What do you say?? :D :D :D
  13. Reason I asked is because I ahd heard with the blulines people were having interferance with the X-10 stuff and some said an X-10 filter helped a great deal. Maybe you can try that on the ballast and see if it helps. Radio Shack sells them cheap. Sorry I could be of no more help. Alberto
  14. What kind of electronic ballast do you have?
  15. The returns from the sump come into the tank through 2 bulkheads drilled about 3-4" below the water surface. So, when the pumps stop the water back syphons until it reaches that point. I have accomodated for it, but last time I made a water change, I must ahve filled the sump 30 gal higher than I should have. Now I know where that point is exactly. ??? The tank is inside the house while all the equipment is outside in the garage. The house is cooled by AC, but the garage is not. The tank feels cool to the touch always. With the garage close, raining outside, and with a humidity of 100%, the evaporation from the tank inside the garage has no place to go. Anything colder than the water will created condensation on it. So, all the PVC pipes, hoses, wires, and just about anything in the garage starts to condensate water over it. I used to have a box fan blowing in the garage with the door opened, but that doesn't work at night since I close the garage door. Plus, the fan was making even more condensation when the door was closed and when it rained outside. again, this is only an issue when it rains more than one day outside while it is pretty warm like it has been for the past 2 days. Still, a pain in the a........s!! Alberto
  16. Well, I woke up this morning and while walking to the kitchen I smell this fresh cut acropora frag smell. After 3 sec. all I culd think was f......k!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :( :( I ran down the stairs to find the tank 1/3 empty. I ran into the garage to find everything electric off and water all over the place. All the wires and plug in were drenched in water. Apparently since it has been rtaining, the garage had been close for a couple of days and the humidity built up to the point that water condensated on one of the pipes and dripped onto a plug, it tripped the circuit breaker, pumps stopped, and water overflowed into the sump. 30 gal on the floor of the garage!! I was able to get the pumps started by plugging them into another outlet I left things running and had to run out the door after trying to dry the rest of the stuff. My best guess is that it had been off for no more than 1 hour. We'll see the livestock damage when I get home. Alberto
  17. Well, I guess he'll be getting in the same ballpark evaporation I am getting now in my nano tank :D :D :D Actually, this is very helpfull. I ahve bought some frags from someone in Michigan before and the way he sent them was taking the frag and wrapping them in paper towl that was damped in water. He put about 15 in one ziplock bag and shipped them in an insulated box. I was royally p....d when I unpacked it, but they all did well. Will give it a try. Alberto
  18. Tony: I have a small policy when it comes to livestock: all corals must be captive raised frags. 100% of it. I have gotten a bunch from a few online places, but the majority have come from local reefers. I have over 100 corals growing now and with the exception of 2 small platygyra, they were all frags. Those 2 are the only colonies I ahve ever gotten and it was from Dr. Mac at the summer meeting last year. http://home.attbi.com/~monaghan/ http://www.shawnbennett.com/ http://www.ocean-oasis.com/macros.htm http://www.upscales.com/home.ihtml http://www.reefstuff.com/store....y=frags http://www.theaquariumcity.com/ http://members.localnet.com/~playfair/4sale/availability.html http://suetruett.homestead.com/home.html http://www.reefaholics.org/ http://www.dynamicecomorphology.com/ http://www.reeffarmers.com/ http://www.kensreef.homestead.com/index.html http://www.soutassaltwater.com/ http://www.aquaprop.com/ http://www.angelfire.com/ma3/ghcorals/ Hope that helps. Always remember to allow about 4-6 inch of space beetwen frags because they will grow eventually. Alberto
  19. OK Tony. We can either keep it up and one of us (you :D ) will get offended or we can stop here. I just wanted to know if there was something I should know that I missed. Some of us (me ) don't have m-f 9-5 jobs. Did want to go, but couldn't be helped. I did hear it was a good talk. Maybe next time. ::
  20. Well, did he also tell you about the leaking seals in new close loop set ups and how not to kill half your corals while switching tanks? :D :D Sorry, you asked for it......... Just kidding buddy :D :D
  21. Really, so what is it? Give me a little synopsis here. Throw me a bone here I want to hear more about this. I actually know of a guy doing this already for frags and he claims good success with it. I actually got some frags from him a while back mailed overnight damped in paper towl and they did just fine. Alberto
  22. Well, after considering prices and headaches, I decided to have GEO in RC make me a custom unit. It is 36" tall and 8" diameter with a little giant 2MD pump for recirculation. It holds close to 50 LB of media and should be coming this week. Thanks for the input.
  23. Well, I was unable to go to the meeting. Did Bruce Carlson have some great new insight? Anything new and radical we should know about? I've never heard much about the guy other than the devide he was made famous for. Alberto
  24. Most mail order places that you can buy the frozen foods cheaper would require such a large order to offset the overnight shipping that you are talking about massive poundage. Definately not worth it. Last spring, I drove to thatpetplace in PA for their annual show/sale. The manufacturer reps were there and I got some stuff discounted. Even then, to make a real difference I would ahd to ahve bought over $180-200 worth of frozen fish food. Not going to hapen, hence the reason I amke my own food. Not to mention it is actually much better I think. I've never used cyclopeeze or golden pearls. That is why I don't add it.
