Why not see if you can't get some one to make you a 2.5 Pico or so, then use a piece of glass with a glued on O ring, with I guess nylon locking screws to hold the lid on tightly, then use an intank sponge/power head filter as filtration/water movement. With Compacts for lighting.... Save what do you do for for gas excahnge? Maybe a slightly larger 5.5 gallon may suit your needs better. Just have the water level be a bit down from the rim....

go get yourself a 3 gallon eclipse ...... out in an 18w coralife , cutom fit in the hood.......................seal the top with a custom cut acrylic splash guard, courtesy of a dremel ............... get creative w/ feeding. also check out nano-reef.com

So I was thinking about how you could make a tank splash proof but still have an opening to allow for some gas exchange, access for feeding, and such. Here's what I came up with.

The tubes could be made out of almost anything, even PVC pipe would be easy but a black acrylic box might look nicer. Of course if you added a canopy it wouldn't matter what they look like. You'd have to do some experiementing to see how tall they would need to be to prevent any water from splashing out but not so tall as to make access a PITA. Tubes would be narrow and placed in the back so that a light could be mounted in front of them.

Lid could be removed for better access, cleaning etc.

You'd have to go with a bare bottom or you could make a false bottom out of sand mixed with silicon. I saw pics on another forum where someone had mixed sand into silicon and spead a layer over the bottom of his tank. He also added sand to the top of the silicon, pushing into the silicon. After it dried he washed out all the loose sand and was left with a bottom that had the look of sand with a thin layer to sand on top but was glued down so no sandstorms.

For the rock you'd have to find some way of anchoring it. Maybe choose one or two interesting shaped, larger peices (last thing you would want is lots of smaller peices to fall around). Maybe tie them down to some eggcrate cut to fit in the bottom of the tank. Then you could cover the eggcrate with the sand/silicon mixture. It would glue everything down and make it look nicer too.

Spill ?

how fast are you driving that RV ?... or are you doing Off-Road driving too?

contact Jeff (Naga) he is an acrylic guy, and could likely custom build you a sealable acrylic tank to do what you are looking for. I would not attempt any sort of tank without a lid in a moving vehicle. I would also have a way to attach the tank firmly to a countertop or something, as 1 small fender bender, or 1 bad pothole, and you are going to have a mess when the tank goes flying...

What would be really interesting is if you could make a completely sealed display with maybe a really tall sump that could take some splashing/sloshing from driving. Or you could try one of those picture frame aquariums.

how about a large clear ballon  .

I'd be concerned about glass cracking when the water moves as well.

I had a 10G one time, half full of water. I tried to move it, and

it cracked. That water has a lot of inertia.

I'd go with acrylic, a little thicker than normal.
