hbh February 9, 2007 February 9, 2007 I am wondering if someone would be available to help me set up my new UV sterilizer. I thought it would be submersible but it is not. So I am stumped, not sure if I need more equipment, and have so far kept all equipment w/in the tank (due to children). Anyone want to help? Thank you! Email : mlhhoffman@msn.com. Also. please bump this somewhere else if needed!
Buucca February 9, 2007 February 9, 2007 You didn't mention what type of UV you have. There are generally two types that I know of (In-Line or Hang on types). If it is In-Line just install it in "series" with your return hose from your sump or canister return line. If it is a Hang-On you can put a "Tee" on the return line or use a dedicated pump. On the "Series" make sure you orientate the flow in the proper direction as marked.
VicSkimmr February 9, 2007 February 9, 2007 Why would you want it on your return vs. your overflow line?

Say you have a refugium where you're providing a safe spot for copepods to breed. If you put the UV Sterilizer on the return, wouldn't that kill any pods that pass through it?

If you put the UV Sterilizer on the return, wouldn't that kill any pods that pass through it? Depending upon the flow rate, you will kill what is in the water column that passes thru the UV. If it's not in the water column, or passes thru the UV to fast, it will not be killed. IMO, this is where a lot of the misconception and misunderstanding about UV lies. I am a long term user of UV, but still have an abundance of micro life in my display, frag tank and fuge.
VicSkimmr February 9, 2007 February 9, 2007 I'm definitely going to be purchasing one, but I'm just trying to wrap my head around the concept of it, especially the plumbing part. I never would've thought about the bubbles on the overflow line.
hbh February 10, 2007 Author February 10, 2007 (edited) The UV sterilizer is a Helix Max 9w Aqua medic with 1/2 " to 5/8" inlet/outlets and includes an "In-Cabinet mounting plate". Does this info help? My set up is unique as my pump/ mech. & biofilter/spray bar run across the top of my tank. Anyone want to help? Please? Edited February 10, 2007 by hbh
