I started up my 90g a few days ago...I'm wondering how long/often I should be running my protein skimmer (ETSS Evolution 750 skimmer)

my stocking list is pretty small right now: a 3-3.5" yellow tang, small ocellaris clown, and bicolor blenny. I have quite a bit of LR (you can see pictures here ) .. it's all very established - most came from my old 55g

I'm getting complaints about noise from family members...was kinda hoping I wouldn't have to run it 24/7 :why:

you should run it all the time, get a different skimmer family.

fixed.

hehe .. yeah maybe I'll look around for a new one

I definitely don't want to have that noisy thing on 24/7...you can hear it all over the house

Define noisy? What kind of noise?

If it's air draw, (most likely) an air expansion chamber will allow the air to be drawn in much more efficiently. This compresses the air draw and makes it quieter. (muffler)

Don't use floss or sponge thinking this will work.

Not to be confussed with:

If it's internal water noise, you can cut back flow and close the gate valve to compensate.

Keep in mind closing gate valve too much can cause high flow or overrun on start up.

If it's water splashing from exit, you can submerge the exit pipe in the sump which may require you to open the gate valve more to compensate for back pressure.

If it's really your sleepy time sea sound tape, remember,

the volume knob also turns to the left.

If you're sure it's the first, lmk

wow, is it really that loud?

maybe your family has every right to be mad. I wouldn't want niagara falls in my living room.

Just make them think they are crazy, and tell them that you don' hear it. Eventually, they'll ignore it or come to like it. Or, as the tank matures, people will tend to stare instead of listen.

Reminds me of the high-pitched tone that some stores were playing over their speakers recently to annoy teenagers and keep them from hanging out in the stores. Most older people like me can't hear it at all but it drives the teenagers nuts. The whole idea backfired when kids began loading the tone in their cell phones as ring tones or text message alerts knowing their teacher would not be able to hear the cell phone ringing.

Anyway, I downloaded the ring tone on my laptop and I play it whenever my kids begin to get on my nerves. They leave the room within seconds!

What is making the noise? The pump, the water gurgling, the air?

Some folks have put a mouspad or something underneath the pump to help silence it.

the pump is what's making the noise...I've tried all sorts of things to make it quieter (padding underneath, etc)...I think the next thing to do is install some sort of sound muffling material on the walls of the stand.

if worst comes to worst I guess I could always buy a new, quieter pump. Any suggestions? My current pump is an old, little giant pump.

How long has it been running? I was just reading on the AquaC site that they can be fairly loud for the first few weeks things get going smoothly.
