Buucca January 26, 2007 January 26, 2007 Hello all, My Orp meter is reading 425mv and I don't know how to lower orp. Also my 2 feather dusters 1 has expelled from its tube and the other the tube has split open and 2 (worms) are trying to expel from the tube. can anyone shed some light on these two questions. Thanks Buucca
jamal January 26, 2007 January 26, 2007 the orp may or may not be correct. what are the other parameters in the tank? also according to randy holmes-farley the probe can misread the orp in the tank especially if the probe hasnt recently been cleaned. when is the last time you did this?

The Orp meter is a week old and was calibrated when installed. The PH is 8.5, water temp 81.5F, salinity 1.023 haven,t checked alk.and calcium in a week also at that time nitrate was <10ppm. Also any thoughts on the feather duster dilemma?
Guest tgallo January 27, 2007 January 27, 2007 your orp level is ideal, are you running ozone, and if yes how many mg. your ph seems kinda high to me and you really need to check your alk levels, they mite be out of wack.
Buucca January 27, 2007 Author January 27, 2007 I was concerned because Bob Fenner wrote anything over 400mv was dangerous to life. I just checked and its 428 now. Also just tested and Alk. is 11 dkh Cal. 350. I did a 10% water change this evening when I noticed the Orp level but no change. By the way I'm not running any ozone to date

Worry about what things *look* like in the tank and use the readings to help understand what criterion may be a sign of problems. Check out my ORP/pH/Temp graph on my reef site under Hardware/Statistics. My ORP is high too.
Buucca January 27, 2007 Author January 27, 2007 Thanks for the replies, seems that Fenners guidelines were "Old School". Emmisary: Your web site is great! very informative. I'm not as concerned after seeing your readings, but your instruction said to divide the reading by 10 which would have made it 4.28 assuming it meant 428mv. All the animals in the tank look healthy except the 2 feather dusters that expelled themselves last night a apparently died (cant find them anywhere) also the yellow polyps aren,t extending, but the frogspawns, hammers, mushrooms, blasto's etc. all look great.

Heh, sorry for the "divide by 10" confusion. I'm actually graphing "ORP/10" and "pH*10" meaning that in order to get ORP, you'd have to multiply by 10, and in order to get pH you'd have to divide by 10. Kinda horky, but that's the best I could come up with on short notice with the particular graphing thing that I"m using. I don't know what specifically might be bothering the featherdusters -- too much flow? Not happy with the location in the tank? Something like that could also be a culprit with the yellow polyps. Even though illness/death is usually a water chemistry/quality-related problem, it isn't always
Buucca January 27, 2007 Author January 27, 2007 Thanks, I'll be doing some further checking flow, chemistry.............buucca Thanks, I'll be doing some further checking flow, chemistry.............buucca
