I have switched over to this salt from the mei salt.  I had been having problems since before using the mei, and things never improved, and may have possibly worsened.  I am real happy with the oceanic salt.  One huge diffence I have noticed, which says a lot to me, is that the corals produce no slime from decent sized water changes.  I experienced it with both instant ocean and mei.  No ideas why.

My 300g, breeder rack, and standalones with clowns, anemones, and clams all seem to deal with oceanic just fine if not better then IO.  I deal better with the speed of mixing, lack of residue, and apparent consistency so far.

We shall see.

Anyone find the 200g buckets in metro for a good price?  Maybe we should get a friendly store to bring in pallet.

Michael,

Do you know or have an opinion on calcium content of Oceanic vs. Reef Crystals?  I have a big bucket of Reef Crystals and was wondering if I should go ahead and get Oceanic.  I'm not dosing kalk, which I will, so I wanted to keep my calc up through water changes for now.

Do you think it wouldn't matter much since I'm doing weekly 10-15% water changes.  I mostly have frags now (approx. 25) except for 3 colonies from AlgaeMan.

Thanks  ... Jose

Are you testing the calcium and alk?  Even with those water changes both will deplete rather quickly IME.  The calcium levels of oceanic are on the high side.

Hmmm .. then I better start dosing kalk and get some Oceanic salt.

I have not tested calc or alk yet but will tonight.  I've had the test kits just didn't use them yet - doh!

Thanks Michael.  I definitely appreciate the help as I'm a n00b!

i used quite a bit of salts and this is my 2nd favorite (biosea is my favorite but i dont likepaying shipping for it so i stay with oceanic)all my levels are great with it and mixing time is great. good thing oyu mentioned this because i just realized its itme to buy more salt lol.

I switch to Oceanic six month ago from IO and have had only one dead coral, but I believe it was due to something else.  Besides that, my tank mates are doing great and prospering well.  I'm happy until something else better come out for less $$.  he he - who wouldn't?

House of Tropicals has it, Aquarium Center has it,  Apparently, Congressional Aquarium has it.  I have seen it at SuperPet (in Annandale), and I think we also saw it at Wallys.  I want to say I've seen it somewhere else in the DC area, but I am not quite sure, maybe it was one of the Petco's down there.  From what I have seen/heard it sounds like Congressional has it the cheapest, followed by Aquarium Center.

I bought some at the Aquarium Center on Friday and have just done a 10% water change.

On first use impression i'm 50/50, yes it dissolves very quickly and is crystal clear after mixing, but my tank pH was low and i was hoping to raise it a tad with the water change, it didn't even raise it .1, so i might get rid of it, i'll give it the benefit of another couple water changes.

it's $49 for 200 Gal bucket at aquarium center

Man that's pretty expensive. I can get 200 gal mix of IO for $29.99. I don't get hung up on people saying it is great because it has "high calcium". CaCl is dirt cheap, add what you want to any salt mix and the Ca will be up there. IO has proven itself through the years, it is consistent. Even if you have to add a tsp of Kent turbo calcium to get the calcium level you want the savings is still alot ($20 for 200 gal). I'll stick with old reliable for now.

.....IO has proven itself through the years, it is consistent. ......

I must disagree.  Over the last 18 months some batches leave a serious residue, take forever to disolve, or measure high ammonia until 24hours of aeration.......and then some don't.  When buying 5 buckets at a shot, it is not fun to get the wrong batch.

We'll see if Oceanic is any better over time.

i hate io, when i used it none of my stuff opened like it does now.

Michael,

These are some tank parameters I just took last night.  All results were from Salifert using low resolution mode (unless noted):

Calcium = 380 ppm

KH/Alk = 12.2 dKH / 4.34 meq/L

pH = 8.11 (Pinpoint Monitor)

Temp = 81.5 (several sources)

Nitrate = 25 ppm

These readings were taken before dosing kalk.  I started dripping kalk now.  I'm concerned with the high Alk but not so much with the Nitrates.  I have a BB tank but haven't siphoned detritus in about 2-3 weeks.  I'm currently using Reef Crystals but may switch, after all my IO & RC are gone, to Oceanic.

BTW ... last I checked Congressional sells the Oceanic 200 bucket for $30.
