F&Fmgr November 17, 2006 November 17, 2006 i have clear braided vinyl/pvc hose, and i was wondering if i can use normal clear pvc glue to attach it to pvc fittings? thanks! if it is not underwater id use a plastic hose clamp, or a good ole fashioned metal clamp around some teflon on top of male threaded fittings. if the fitting is barbed a clamp without teflon wil do. is it pressure, or drain side? Sean PS web man!!!

Charlie, if it is true flexible PVC there is a specific glue that needs to be used on it. You can not get it at your local home depot either, it must say on the can for flexible pvc use. I do have it of course. john

Sean PS web man!!! I've looked for plastic hose clamps because I don't like putting metal ones underwater. Couldn't find any. Can you post a link? thanks tim
flowerseller November 17, 2006 November 17, 2006 I use the "tiger flex" flexable pvc for 15 years. This is not the clear stuff (vinyl) or the clear braided stuff (also vinyl) but is the same stuff used for pools or spas plumbing. I get the "Rain-R-Shine "blue glue" made by Oatey at HD and haven't had any issues during this time. If this clear stuff is what you are talking about, I DO NOT believe there is a satisfactory way to cement this directly to a pvc fitting like you would cement rigid piping and fittings together. It must be clamped! An example would be if you can heat it in hot water and expand or push it to fit over a barbed fitting, you can not glue it and must clamp it. Unless ofcourse you don't mind or might actually enjoy mopping up water.
ErikS November 17, 2006 November 17, 2006 Start with - A) Is the tubing white PVC tubing, commonly called "SpaFlex"? B) Is the tubing clear PVC w/ braided re-enforcement? For option A you can use PVC cement to make the connection. I've not found the need for the special stuff as long as you prime it well...........BUT.....factor in I've done maybe 20' & Johnny has likely done 20 miles of the stuff - who ya gonna listen to? For option B you can't glue the tubing, it will never hold. You need to make the transition from hard plumbed to tubing with barbed adapters. PVC -> SLIPxNPT -> NPTxBarbed fitting -> tubing. What size is the tubing? (OD, outside diameter) For smaller tubing you can get an assortment pack of plastic clamps & Harbor Freight for a few bucks. They're cheap but will hold just fine. For specific & larger sizes you can get them McMaster-Carr....unless Johnny carries them?
Charlie97L November 17, 2006 Author November 17, 2006 (edited) it's 1" clear braided... both pressure, and CL. i'm trying to go with this to reduce vibrations. the drain will be hard pvc. thanks for the responses guys... the return is a mag 7, and the CL is an eheim 1262... so neither are *huge* pressure pumps. plastic clamps? john do you carry them? maybe i'll swing down to BRK this evening and see what i can work up. gah. pick up my skimmer too!
