Topic: Backup Power and Disaster Preparedness

Speaker Biography: Jim Graham

image.png.76a1533f5f6b296fa9b36e4c9a8bef70.png

Jim Graham is an active in socials marine aquarist with interests in emergency preparedness, lighting, and wanting to know what's inside the reefing products we use. He's also a 20 years, 16 days US Air Force retired Master Sergeant aircraft electrician turned medicine maker for the last 16 years, and a champion for budget reefing. Jim enjoys sharing inexpensive alternatives to expensive consumables and gear, but at the foundation of it all is Jim's wanting to be prepared when the bad thing happens. That means being ready for power outages, gear failure, and operator errors. Ultimately, the goal is to simply have a plan.

Jim's current tank is a mixed reef IM100 EXT that's now 400+ days happy. Started with dry rock, live rock, live sand, and live media from locals and commercial sources, Jim's tank is a thriving mixed reef that has been populated with fish and coral from Day 1. The tank is lit with two GHL Mitras LX7206 fixtures with a ReeFi Uno Pro 2.0 mounted between. Water movement is provided by Jebao SDW and SLW power heads and flow through the 30 gallon Fiji Cube sump is provided by an Orlushy return pump. Protein skimmer duties are managed by a SmarterReefs roller skimmer and minor control/monitoring is overseen by a GHL Mini WiFI. Finally, dosing of kalk slurry, Captiv8 trace, sodium hydroxide, and vinegar is entrusted to a GHL Doser 2.1 standalone.

  • AlanM changed the title to WAMAS Winter (Annual) Meeting February 10, 2024 - Jim Graham

Our speaker for this meeting has changed!

Joe has a medical emergency that makes him unable to be with us this Saturday, but we will still have a speaker at the meeting.  We have been wanting to have Jim Graham @telegraham on WAMAS speak to the club for a while, and he was available to speak to us this Saturday.  His bio has been updated in the top post.

His topic will be "Backup Power and Disaster Preparedness" which is very relevant to everyone in the club.  I'm excited to hear from him and to get lots of great ideas.  He's inventive and has  fun YouTube and Instagram channels with a bunch of examples of ways to take some of the risk out of your reefkeeping on a budget.
