Removing a rim

Can I remove the top rim on a 40 gallon and have it not ruin the integrity of the tank? I’ve done it in smaller tanks, like 10 gallons, but the water volume in a 40 gallon makes me a little nervous. I don’t like the top rim as it makes it hard for items like a protein skimmer, etc to fit properly.

I've done an old 20 long for freshwater that has been fine for 2+ years now, but I don't know that I'd go bigger than that. My 29 tall (rims still intact) sprung a leak on its own a few weeks ago, and cleanup was a huge headache

I would not do it.  There are rimless 40 gallons and higher, but they are specifically designed to hold that way with thicker glass and higher tolerance on the seams.  It would probably hold for a while, but it's a big risk.
