  1. Saturday is SCALES' last day open. We will be releasing used reef lighting, aquarium books and moving out all the rest of the stuff here that needs to go. We still have cleanup crew available, one fuzzy dwarf lionfish and lots of small, drilled tanks. If you purchased a used tank, it must be picked up Friday or Saturday.
  2. There's a lot left... Still frozen foods, marine/reef water conditioners/additives, lots of critters especially, including peppermint shrimp, blue leg hermits, star snails, porcelain crabs, turbo snails, nerite snails, cerith snails, a jawfish or two, urchins, emerald crabs (green or pink) and some other stuff. All remaining corals are $5, $10 or $20. We need a home for a large miniatus grouper. Want a beautiful small reef display? We have an Oceanic Tech setup, 45 gal, comes with tank, stand and Oceanic sump for only $600... Normal low SCALES price was $1200 on this setup. Tanks - tons left. Folks, this is an amazing, if unfortunate, opportunity. We have 30 (36x12x16) and 40br (36x18x16) with a hole drilled low on the the side panel. These are perfect for making sumps to use with external pumps. Also 40br tanks with overflow holes available for a stand alone display or a satellite tank off a large system. Lots of 15 (24x12x12) and 20H (24x12x16) tanks with holes drilled on the top back corner for use with inline systems. It's easy to plumb these into an existing system or start a new system. There are a few custom 100 (72x18x18) tanks both drilled for overflows or standard. You'll never see these tanks again without paying mucho bucks for a custom build. Got some 75's too, these have a hole drilled low in the back panel. This can be plumbed for a standpipe overflow or used as an intake for an external pump. Or, drill some more holes and have a cool CL pattern. Thanks to everyone who came by this weekend to help us clear out.
  3. SCALES Tropical Fish Warehouse will be closing its doors at the end of the month. The principals have decided to close the retail front and focus on our service and custom installation activities. Everything has got to go! All retail goods and livestock are 50% off. All store fixtures, tanks, equipment, etc. are for sale. There's a lot of stuff here to be sold! See the web for details. We have a ton of tanks and other equipment that would be great for display systems, breeding/propagation systems, sumps, refugia and much more. Sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years and we hope you can come by and take advantage of our liquidation to further your own pursuit in the hobby.

  10. Sometimes you'll get a problem if the water level in the skimmer is too high relative to the water level in the tank, especially with CPR BakPak skimmers. If you have any media in the skimmer, take it out and give it a try. Check the outflow too to make sure there's nothing slowing the water flow from the skimmer back to the tank.
  11. Last night and this morning I just brought more than 150 new SW fish out of quarantine... 13. Do a 72" long tank if you only have 24" front-to-back. Anything longer will look a bit funny IMO. A standard 180 (72x24x24) would be perfect. Tanks usually look better if you don't try to use the maximum space available and you can use the money you save on good equipment and livestock. If it was my tank I'd do a T5HO system on it, maybe a 12x36" bulb or 16x36" bulb fixture, and forego the MH option. The Deep Dimension tanks are awesome but in townhouse it might be a little much...

  15. First, we have a Marineland Deep Dimensions in the store that will not be installed for a few days. If you haven't seen one of these yet and would like to, come on down! We have the 250gal, 60" long model here. Bring your measuring tape. Also, we still have an AGA 75gal oak color frame tank with overflow offered at only $199.99 to WAMAS or CMAS members. This is essentially cost for this tank, at the old price levels... I've spoken to my AGA rep who has told me that there has not been a design change in terms of tempered glass used for the sides of their aquariums. If you are interested in seeing which tanks have tempered bottoms, you can look here: AGA Tank Specs. Plus, lots of cool fish, inverts, corals...
  16. I have two new AGA 75-gallon Reef Ready aquariums here, one black frame (black frame sold!!) and one oak frame. I'll let them go to WAMAS or CMAS members for $199.99 each! Nice Zoas and other polyps, pink, apricot, red and some cool combinations too... Again, nice big rocks here. Lots of leathers with some particularly nice yellow finger leathers. Scroll Corals, yellow/burgundy specimens (Redskins anyone?) Crazy colored mushrooms, red, blue, green, hairy, fuzzy, bumpy and more! Cleanup crew!! We got 'em; great prices and volume deals too. 18. The Fang Blenny was hilarious... This one not so much. I really have no idea how the cone snail got in there. I've already called Holmes and Watson Detective Agency to work the case .
  19. That's the problem. I DID pick it up. Got the back end though...
  20. So I was innocently collecting Cerith snails for a customer today when I found something else in the sand. At first glance, I thought it was a fighting conch. Nope... Cone Snail. The adrenaline has now passed... Nice peaceful, safe hobby we have!
  21. Got some... Thanks to everyone who contacted me and don't be shy about your other coral frags for sale!
  22. We're looking for 10 approx 2 square inch frags of Orange/Red Montipora. We will pay $5 each in cash for these. We buy lots of hobbyist-raised frags for cash. If you have corals you'd like to sell, please pm me here or call me at the number on the web site. Generally we always like Euphyllias, GSP, Zoas, plating Montis, Corallimorphs and other good "retail" stock (i.e., good for beginners). Other varieties will certainly be considered. Please contact me and only me before bringing to the store to make sure that we have room and are interested in what you are growing.
  23. PVAS is proud to present: the All-Aquarium Catfish Convention 2008: Expedition Amazon! Through this convention we will explore the Amazon basin, its fishes, especially catfishes, habitats and their aquarium care. If you are interested in Amazon river system and its aquatic life, you don't want to miss this event. Our top-notch speaker lineup features presenters from the US, Germany and the UK. In addition to the speakers there are fish shows, social events, auctions and more. For more information see: Expedition Amazon
  24. I think the 3-month (!!!) warranty is more than enough statement about that company. Most manufacturers are doing 3-year to lifetime warranties on large tanks now.
  25. All is not as it appears... There are three intakes being used for the closed loop. One on the top third, one in the middle and one near the bottom. All three will be plumbed into the single CL pump. The intake drawing from the bottom will have a valve to control the amount of flow through it to manage exactly the situation Dave's describing. In the worst case scenario, Larry will be able to turn it off completely. The bottom intake will also be protected by a live rock feature which will be designed in such a way to encourage water to enter from the top rather than the bottom. Finally, his batch of Southdown is a little more coarse than I've seen the Sugar fine. It will hold together better, especially with rock in place. Larry's also not done adding sand... I think the next batch might be a little more coarse than the Southdown sand.
