  1. I understand and agree but the point is we don't know the real cause, In the keys they put marked isotopes in a septic tank and could measure them in nearby reefs in 72 hours. hmmm,, many reef are in areas of low income that dump raw sewage in the sea. we don't know the cause of the low PH and I want to do something that really works and as log as we buy the current info we might not be doing something that will really help. By the way I live in a home In WA State that is solar and wind powered I draw water from a deep well (I am a lifetime member of WAMAS Because I used to live in N VA and was webmaster for this site). I am not a right wing nut but I love this planet and like all of us that do I have been betrayed by the very people we thought were trying to help
  2. The point of starting this thread was not to deny that we are causing damage but to bring conversation on what is real and what is hoax. Carbon dioxide (chemical formula CO2) is a chemical compound composed of two oxygen atoms covalently bonded to a single carbon atom. Carbon dioxide is used by plants during photosynthesis to make sugars. I used to own a greenhouse and we pumped CO2 into the air to increase growth, the more we added the more oxygen we had in the air. In my planted tanks we add it to increase plant growth NOAA states in their May 2008 "State of the science fact sheet for ocean acidification" that: "The oceans have absorbed about 50% of the carbon dioxide (CO2) released from the burning of fossil fuels, resulting in chemical reactions that lower ocean pH. This has caused an increase in hydrogen ion (acidity) of about 30% since the start of the industrial age through a process known as “ocean acidification.” A growing number of studies have demonstrated adverse impacts on marine organisms, including: the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Climate Change 2007: Synthesis Report. WOW that is one of the major orgs that have tricked the DATA. So NOAA was lied to or they knowingly gave us the wrong info. Do we know if anything we thought of as science is true, The whole concept is now flawed because all of the science is from people who have "tricked the data" At this point everything we thought we knew is suspect,, have any of us spent 30 years gathering our own data from satellites we control, do any of us have a network of undersea sensors that we have been monitoring. every piece of our data come groups that are now know to have fed us non-truth (lies). For all we know toothpaste or prep H or eating at Taco Bell could be the problem,, WE JUST DON"T KNOW. None of us can say we do because we have all been fed flawed data Mike I agree that to err on the side of caution is a good path,, but we might not even know what the path is. what if they say we need to stop breeding so we must all be fixed. maybe we must not allow people to have health care past 65, Or we must all live in 600 sq ft home with no AC. All of these things would reduce human impact but is this a path we want to have forced on us. The people who have told us what is real are suspect so do we know what we must really do? I think it's time to start over with studies done by people (who don'e lie) who will do open studies and show us the data they base their conclusions on. Then we can start down a real path to Taking care of this planet in a way that is real. read this article
  3. Jack I read the whole 160 gig of email and the web site you posted is part of the group that is being laughed at. There is email from their main people asking each other why the real trend is cooler (for years and years) and reply from peers telling them to rig the numbers so as to not lose control of the debate. Quote from one of the stories "Professor Phil Jones, the head of the Climate Research Unit, and professor Michael E. Mann at Pennsylvania State University, who has been an important scientist in the climate debate, have come under particular scrutiny. Among his e-mails, Mr. Jones talked to Mr. Mann about the "trick of adding in the real temps to each series ... to hide the decline [in temperature]." Mr. Mann admitted that he was party to this conversation and lamely explained to the New York Times that "scientists often used the word 'trick' to refer to a good way to solve a problem 'and not something secret.' " Though the liberal New York newspaper apparently buys this explanation, we have seen no benign explanation that justifies efforts by researchers to skew data on so-called global-warming "to hide the decline." Given the controversies over the accuracy of Mr. Mann's past research, it is surprising his current explanations are accepted so readily. All of the data belongs to British funded centers and was supposed to be released under their freedom of info act and they even discuss how to avoid releasing it as it will destroy they cause. their new talking point is these documents were stolen so are out of context,, read a few and then make up your mind. " I believe we need to care for the planet but this destroys the credibility of the sky is falling crowd. however we will see people fight back against this truth because they are invested either politically or their mass investment in the economy of low impact products. If we stop buying cfl bulbs more than 100,000 people will be out of work(but we forget they impact massive mercury in the landfills, or the massive buy of hybrid autos that even the most ardent global warming advocates admit cause a greater carbon footprint than driving a hummer (research sudbury Ont Can) by the time they mine the nickel, ship to plants in Japan, make batteries, then dispose of them their is no saving. Hiding data, destroying information, and doctoring their results raise real questions about many American academics at universities such as Pennsylvania State University, University of Arizona, and University of Massachusetts at Amherst. When at all possible available data must be shared. Usually academic research is completely ignored by the general public but in this case proposed regulations, costing trillions of dollars, are being based on many of these claimed research results. This coordinated campaign to hide scientific information appears unprecedented. SIDE NOTE NASA is defying a court order to release uncorrected climate data to a major magazine. - internal discussions about NASA's quiet correction of its false historical U.S. temperature records after two Canadian researchers discovered a key statistical error, specifically discussion about whether and why to correct certain records, how to do so, the impact or wisdom or potential (or real) fallout therefrom or reaction to doing so (requested August 2007); I love the reefs, I want to do the right things, who do I listen to. It has to be someone who uses science that they can replicate over and over and that they don't have to hide some of the results to prove their point. Now it looks like the flat earth group is the people who refuse to look at new evidence that suggest we may have been lied to all along.
  4. Just got back from Israel (diving in the red sea) and Europe and mid east is buzzing with news of major climate scandle. Scientific progress depends on accurate and complete data. It also relies on replication. The past couple of days have uncovered some shocking revelations about the practices that pass as sound science about climate change and have been based on lies. It turn out that the main team of science jockeys, the guys who came up with the model that the UN used to come up with the Global warming concept HAVE BEEN COOKING THE NUMBERS. It was announced Thursday afternoon that computer hackers had obtained 160 megabytes of e-mails from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in England. Those e-mails involved communication among many scientific researchers and policy advocates with similar ideological positions all across the world. Those purported authorities were brazenly discussing the destruction and hiding of data that did not support global-warming claims. In some of the emails published they talk about how they cant explain the cooling that defies their theory so they must just suppress the data. If you say I saw the data that shows the warming trend in Climate Research journal, Guess what these Guys ran that Journal. They are in the process of losing all grants and positions. Congress has called for investigation, and the British papers are calling Global Warming the greatest hoax in history. Read the articles below. Climategate: 'Greatest scandal in modern science'... Scientist in climate change 'cover-up' storm told to quit... Call for Congressional investigation... Paper: Junk science exposed among climate-change believers...
  5. I took this picture at a fish hatchery in Oregon. Herman is an (approximately) 11 foot long, 500 pound, 70 year old white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus) who resides at the Bonneville Fish Hatchery at the mouth of Tanner Creek on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.
  6. Your answer is easy You are overfeeding the tank by a large margin. No device will fix the problem as long as you continue You need to: [*] cut the 1/4 cup to 1/16 cup [*]feed every other day (not every day) [*]make your own food (anyone of the officers has a good recipe) [*]Shut off your pumps and target feed all of your critters. This keeps all of your waste levels low. [*]Clean out the skimmer so it can work right. Mix 2 tablespoon
  7. I have read that there are more trees today in the United States of America than there were when the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. We manage trees by controlling forest fires and clearing underbrush. Mankind in this country (Oh there I go being an arrogant American) consumes most of the energy resources in the world, though accounting for only 5 percent of the world's population, Americans consume 26 percent of the world's energy. (American Almanac). Yet you can walk outside and breathe in every city in the country. I have spent time all over the world and its not like that everywhere. According to Newsweek the following cities have the worst air in the world.
  8. Check this out By Brittany P. Yap / byap@starbulletin.com It's a squid, it's an octopus, it's ... a mystery from the deep. What appears to be a half-squid, half-octopus specimen found off Keahole Point on the Big Island remains unidentified today and could possibly be a new species, said local biologists. The specimen was found caught in a filter in one of Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority's deep-sea water pipelines last week. The pipeline, which runs 3,000 feet deep, sucks up cold, deep-sea water for the tenants of the natural energy lab. "When we first saw it, I was really delighted because it was new and alive," said Jan War, operations manager at NELHA. "I've never seen anything like that." The natural energy lab is a state agency that operates Hawaii Ocean Science and Technology Park in Kailua-Kona, adjacent to one of the steepest offshore slopes in the Hawaiian Islands. According to Richard Young, an oceanography professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, the specimen tentatively belongs to the genus Mastigoteuthis, but the species is undetermined. War, who termed the specimen "octosquid" for the way it looked, said it was about a foot long, with white suction cups, eight tentacles and an octopus head with a squidlike mantle. The octosquid was pulled to the surface, along with three rattail fish and half a dozen satellite jellyfish, and stayed alive for three days. According to War, the lab usually checks its filters once a month, but this time, it put a plankton net in one of the filters and checked it two weeks later. The pitch-black conditions at 3,000 feet below sea level are unfamiliar to most but riveting to scientists who have had the opportunity to submerge. The sea floor is full of loose sediment, big boulders and rocks, and a lot of mucuslike things floating in the water, which are usually specimens that died at the surface and drifted to the bottom. "It's quite fascinating," War said. "When you get below 700 feet, it's a totally different world. Lots of fish have heads like a fish and a body like an eel. There are fish floating in a vertical position, with the head up, and don't move unless they're disturbed." Christopher Kelley, program biologist for the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, went to the natural energy lab Tuesday to pick up the preserved octosquid, rattail fish and jellyfish, which had been stored in a freezer, and brought them back to UH-Manoa's oceanography department. "It's a beautiful squid. It's a gorgeous ruby red color," Kelley said. "We really enjoy these little mysteries that come up." Also during Kelley's visit to NELHA yesterday, he and War talked about a more formal sampling program to search for other deep-sea critters. War said their goal is to sample the intake screen more often and capture animals alive and study them in captivity. "This opens up a whole new area of research that UH can be involved with," War said. In October, NELHA will be checking its deep-sea pipelines, something that usually happens every eight to 10 years, because it is worried that something might have happened to them during the earthquakes in October. "If it's a new species, (NELHA) would like to name it," War said. "But that is sort of the honor of whoever classifies it."
  9. I am confused do I buy sunglasses or long underwear
  10. I have never had a strong belief one way or the other. I just want to listen to empirical facts. I am tired of being fed
  11. check out this post. I have seen the claim that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reports, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists. Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. yet all studies show "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa." Too much junk science on the global warming bandwagon. I want solid truth.
  12. Check this out. There are so many sides to this and most of them are political. One side says "if you dont agree with global warming you are a fool" and the other side says why are there so many holes in the concept. I want to be on a side that says where is the solid proof. I would love to find research that is not political but pure science. I am now reading that we should consider co-housing, that we are hoging solar energy with ethanol production, that raising beef is a planet killer and many other voices that are just trying to advance a belief system that is from one counter culture or another. I am spending a little time in Florida. Pro Global Warmers say we should have huge hurricanes. WE have had 2 very calm years. They are wrong on so many fronts that I am losing faith in their science. I want facts. Read the following and it will muddy the waters a little more. The more we understand there is confusion the more we will see that the truth is still not being presenting to us by the politicians or the science groups that are funded by political groups like the UN or PETA. I have small faith in groups that want me to sell my car, quit using deoderant, and air conditioning while I eat a sprout sandwich and work for a socialist goverment. I think we should want the truth and what we have been given so far just has a lot of problems. Chiago Sun Times June 30, 2007 BY JAMES M. TAYLOR In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse. If Gore really means what he writes, he has an opportunity to make a difference by leading by example on the issue of global warming. A cooperative and productive discussion of global warming must be open and honest regarding the science. Global warming threats ought to be studied and mitigated, and they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position. Many of the assertions Gore makes in his movie, ''An Inconvenient Truth,'' have been refuted by science, both before and after he made them. Gore can show sincerity in his plea for scientific honesty by publicly acknowledging where science has rebutted his claims. For example, Gore claims that Himalayan glaciers are shrinking and global warming is to blame. Yet the September 2006 issue of the American Meteorological Society's Journal of Climate reported, "Glaciers are growing in the Himalayan Mountains, confounding global warming alarmists who recently claimed the glaciers were shrinking and that global warming was to blame." Gore claims the snowcap atop Africa's Mt. Kilimanjaro is shrinking and that global warming is to blame. Yet according to the November 23, 2003, issue of Nature magazine, "Although it's tempting to blame the ice loss on global warming, researchers think that deforestation of the mountain's foothills is the more likely culprit. Without the forests' humidity, previously moisture-laden winds blew dry. No longer replenished with water, the ice is evaporating in the strong equatorial sunshine." Gore claims global warming is causing more tornadoes. Yet the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated in February that there has been no scientific link established between global warming and tornadoes. Gore claims global warming is causing more frequent and severe hurricanes. However, hurricane expert Chris Landsea published a study on May 1 documenting that hurricane activity is no higher now than in decades past. Hurricane expert William Gray reported just a few days earlier, on April 27, that the number of major hurricanes making landfall on the U.S. Atlantic coast has declined in the past 40 years. Hurricane scientists reported in the April 18 Geophysical Research Letters that global warming enhances wind shear, which will prevent a significant increase in future hurricane activity. Gore claims global warming is causing an expansion of African deserts. However, the Sept. 16, 2002, issue of New Scientist reports, "Africa's deserts are in 'spectacular' retreat . . . making farming viable again in what were some of the most arid parts of Africa." Gore argues Greenland is in rapid meltdown, and that this threatens to raise sea levels by 20 feet. But according to a 2005 study in the Journal of Glaciology, "the Greenland ice sheet is thinning at the margins and growing inland, with a small overall mass gain." In late 2006, researchers at the Danish Meteorological Institute reported that the past two decades were the coldest for Greenland since the 1910s. Gore claims the Antarctic ice sheet is melting because of global warming. Yet the Jan. 14, 2002, issue of Nature magazine reported Antarctica as a whole has been dramatically cooling for decades. More recently, scientists reported in the September 2006 issue of the British journal Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Series A: Mathematical, Physical, and Engineering Sciences, that satellite measurements of the Antarctic ice sheet showed significant growth between 1992 and 2003. And the U.N. Climate Change panel reported in February 2007 that Antarctica is unlikely to lose any ice mass during the remainder of the century. Each of these cases provides an opportunity for Gore to lead by example in his call for an end to the distortion of science. Will he rise to the occasion? Only time will tell. James M. Taylor is senior fellow for environment policy at the Heartland Institute.
  13. Owning a reef tank is a dilemma? Roozens is a trans-shipper. I have been at many such places and they all have death. Some say as much as 60% (or higher) of all fish taken from the sea die before they reach the local store. We don

  15. I now live a a large RV and I want to put in a 3 gal or less reef tank that wont spill Any ideas???
  16. They are a very patient hunter.. They sit very still untill prey comes close...then thay hit so fast you dont see it happen. I used to keep one and he would eat every thing in the tank. I thought I was safe putting him in a tank of larger fish... I came home and he had eaten a puffer that was bigger than he was (he was stretched over it) I thought he would die but about a week later he was perched on a rock looking for more. I kept him in a 55 gal by himself for the next 8 years. he ate mollies, shrimp and small crabs I caught on the beach.
  17. Hello Doris and I are in florida waiting for warmer weather for a trip out west and we just made a trip to Mote Aquarium in Sarasota. Mote is a small aquarium connected to a major research lab in Sarasota FL Less Flashy than Baltimore or Atlanta it is still worth the visit. Not much in the reef department but with a focus on shark research and marine education its a great visit. Some real good shark tanks with some very nice small species. There were some nice small fish displays A tank full of Florida Flounder Frog Fish... These guys were huge (as big as my head) Stone Fish Soft Coral Display They have a large seaturtle rescue and research lab where they are breeding sea turtles here is a rescued young turtle The real reason to go to Mote is to see the giant Manatee Display, this alone is worth the trip These critters are about half the size of a car and as gracefull as anything I have ever seen. If you are in the Tampa area,, Mote is about 1 hour south in Sarasota and is really worth the trip.
