  1. Hey John! Congrats on the new place. I'm back from my year on the [insert a-political name here] campaign, and I may be sniffing around to get back in the hobby. Of course your store will be my main source, especially since my gf lives in Ashburn. Hope all is well with the move. Best, -IM
  2. Hello all... just a bump. The livestock and rock are all cleared out. However I'm going to re-post the tank setup (see above) for the next day or so. I'm hoping someone will see what a great price this is and grab this before the end of the weekend. I will consider parting out after that but frankly someone planning to upgrade should grab this. Best, -Ian
  3. Grav, you'll never believe this, but when I went home last night, the junior (male) clown had jumped from my tank! It's really terrible. I think it's all the commotion and moving around I've done recently. There's someone coming by Wednesday night at 9 PM who put in for the rocks first, but is only 75% or so. I will put you in second... and if you'd like to come by then, you can follow up. If you buy the rock after all, I'll throw in the female clown, whose personality is AWESOME, and since you're moving tanks you can probably just replace the young clown. Please email me at ianindc@gmail.com with any feedback. -IM
  4. No sir. I like all the remaining people but she's not my choice. Can I interest you in a fish tank? Bob, let me know if you want to come check out what I have... I feel bad about not having pictures but, you know, I'm not a camera man! Thanks, -Ian
  5. Hello everyone. You may remember me, my name is Ian Martinez and I've been active in WAMAS for a while, though due to a major effort on a campaign I'm working with I haven't been as active recently... Due to an unexpected curveball related to the campaign I have to evacuate FAST. It's temporary but long enough to warrant breaking down my tank. Over the next weekend, particularly Saturday, I will be breaking down and selling my 75 gallon reef setup. This is a sad moment but sometimes life forces you to make decisions. I must move, so I must sell. Some things are spoken for but everything else is available. I will split into livestock, Live Rock and tank setup, but not part out at a deeper level. This equipment is the bomb, frankly, and would sell for at least double on the open market. I see this as an opportunity for someone conscientious to upgrade to a 75 at a really cheap price. I believe many reefers like Copps, Sam Brannen and John from BRK will vouch for me. The tank setup includes: 75 gal drilled (three overflows) display tank 29 gal sump 3 gal refugium Assorted PVC piping and multi-valve system (very sturdy and easy to break down/set up) Eheim 1260 return pump Eheim 1262 return pump SCWD alternator with tubing and nozzles Sea Swirl 3/4 inch Wave Maker Euroreef CS-5 Protien Skimmer Air Water Ice Typhoon II 5-piece RO/DI system JBJ Niveaumat auto topoff device 5 gal. food-grade trash bin for topoff Aquactinic TX5 5-bulb T5 model actinic lighting unit with bulbs only a few months old (maybe 3?). Small 30w fuge light Two 5-gallon water-change jugs Two 15-gallon food-grade water-change tubs Various assorted tank goods; scrapers, tests, high-end food, etc. Asking: $1000 85-100 pounds of live rock -- Whole range of sizes from small to massive. Much life, small stars, brimming with 'pods, a tiny bit of turf algae on one or two pieces but overall actually quite clear and well-encrusted. Asking: $200 A pair of oscellaris clowns, one non-stripe the other striped, asking $20 Countless Acros, some Acans, Zoanthids, a massive head of frogspawn, beautiful montis -- all at bargain basement prices. These prices are final but I think quite reasonable indeed. The one thing I would say is, if you want to buy it ALL I can give you a break. Thanks for understanding and rest assured, this pains me a great deal. You can get me at ianindc@gmail.com or 202.257.5945.
  6. It's amazing how an ecosystem can truly adapt... if we give it enough time. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7069933.stm
  7. Looks like more than one person needs to put down the pipe. I personally am a Pastafarian and turn to the Flying Spaghetti Monster for the origins of life. Mogurnda, Carl Sagan has a really great depiction of the origins of life via cyanobacteria in his classic book Cosmos, if you're interested.
  8. Ok, you've got one guy with a coralivore, another with a coral surplus.... http://www.wamas.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15568 Lets get together, people of DC!!!
  9. Hey now rrubberbandman, this is a FISH board, not a PHISH board.
  10. In today's Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/22/science/...amp;oref=slogin I like the "ping pong sponge" the best.

  12. Hey all- Just looking for advice here, but would people say floridapets.com is the best site for getting diverse pod populations? The ones in the bottles are the same 2 species and they're super expensive, and floridapets was a good experience when I was setting up my 29 gallon a few years ago. Any thoughts? Thanks, -Ian
  13. Hey guys, check it out. http://video.on.nytimes.com/index.jsp?fr_s...41bccd4f0852815
  14. That's why we frag swap! I'm always available when someone wants to rid himself of his "extra" colonies...
  15. But does anyone understand exactly what happened that killed the SPS in the first place? I mean, *exactly?* Was is something in the tapwater? I just find it hard to believe that even a water change that big could have outright killed all those SPS just by introducing some kind of trace chemical. Maybe I'm missing something?
  16. Hey all, not really any pictures available, it's all 3/4" and a couple 1" pipes and fittings. There aren't even that many. I think Jason is gonna grab them, but anyone who wants what he doesn't can take it. I also have a 175w 20K XM MH bulb that I bought before I decided I prefer sanity T5s. So if anyone needs a replacement bulb let me know. I'd prefer to sell or trade that but I'm not looking to even break even. -Ian
  17. Hey all, I have a bunch of PVC pipes and joints and other such leftover plumbing sundries from my recent 75 gal. project. Let me know if anyone coming to the meeting Sat. needs any specific pieces, and if I have it, it's yours. -Ian
  18. Nautili, dudes. They sell Nautili. It *is* a dilemma. But there's a line, and then there's too far.
  19. Bartco, if you have a great story, that's what I'm looking for. Shoot me an e-mail at IanInDC@gmail.com
  20. Hi all- Indeed the "club" I was referring to was the "geek" club of marine fish owners. As an investigator myself I appreciate the somewhat bizarre lengths Yomeister went to to check me out, but if he looked carefully, he would in fact have noticed that the City Paper is comprised of editors, interns, and almost entirely freelance writers (10 points to Gryffindor for BeltwayBandit and RastaMan's great detectivework). In my dayjob, I am a journalist for Warren News (www.warren-news.com, also note he masthead at the bottom of www.warren-news.com/aboutwarren.htm), a policy journal publishing company that deals with the communications/technology industry. I suppose a little healthy skepticism is in order but I hope that now we can have an actual conversation about the fish and thei adorable owners. :D Davelin, I'm interested in your lead. Also, if anyone here can direct me to the president of WAMAS, so I can contact him/her, that would be mighty appreciated! Thanks again, -Ian
  21. Hi folks- My name is Ian Martinez; I'm a journalist in DC writing a story for the City Paper about the "geeky," obsessive side of the aquarist's hobby. I myself am a proud member of this club and was able to sell the story to my editor that way. I recently met "Cowrie" at the LFS and she mentioned what a good place this is for the local marine community: I'd love to talk to any and all of you about your experiences as marine hobbyists: particularly those of you who might be willing to share stories of addictive obsessions, past or present. I'm taking a conservationist bent on the story but my main thrust is about the folks out there who own the 240+ tanks, or smaller ones with $4,000 invested, teenagers whose entire paycheck goes to buying UV sterilizers and exotic corals, divorces ending in fish custody battles, etc. I'm sure everyone here has a little bit of the bug inside them and I'd love to hear your tales. Anyhow, please feel free to contact me on this forum, or by my e-mail at IanInDC@gmail.com I think this story should be a really fun one and I'm excited to talk to as many of you as I can.
