  1. Rick, Problem is, there is a 2x4 wooden brace on the top of the tank - dead smack in the middle of the span. Not sure of it's part of the structure, but removing it would not be easy. I may try to take a pic. Hence I'm thinking of adding T5 lights around. -Rob
  2. Howard, I've made some tank measurements. The water surface to bottom distance is 27". There is 24" of vertical room between the acrylic top and the top beam inside the cabinet over the tank. At this point I'm looking at a permanently installed either 175W or 250W MH (2) with spider reflectors. I'm also looking at the Blue Wave II dual ballast. Any comments? Also, what sort of bulb should I get? 10,000k or 20,000k? Thanks... -Rob
  3. Jake, I'm glad you spoke up. :77: As it happens, my gf's 260 gal tank needs some aquascaping as well. You got about 200 lbs of rock to work with and some odd faux corals to boot. Could this be a new career path for you? :idea2: Seriously... Could use some aquascaping hints and tips if you ever in Falls Church area. -Rob
  4. Thanks Howard for the pics. I was gonna ask you if you still have them. So you're thinking 2x 400W pendants? Hmm... any ideas for the source? -Rob PS. Since the pic was taken, the BTA has split and slowly started to bleach - apparently not enough light...
  5. My girlfriend's 260 FO in-wall project has been slowly evolving into a growing reef. Last night we've added 50 lbs of LR, and in the next 2 weeks we're gonna add another 100 lbs for a total of about 200 lbs of live rock. Since Howard's PAR meter light measurements 2 months ago, we've decided to look at ligting options so that we can support a variety of soft and possibly even hard corals. Currently we have a 72" Coralife fixture that has 4 PC elements (combination of actinic/10k/moon lights). This light is insufficient at 30" depth. What are some of your suggestions? There is planty of space over the tank - inside the wall, behind 4 cabinets. I'm thinking 2 MH pendants (250W a piece) and 4 T5 36" actinic strips. Any ideas and recommendations on this size a tank are appreciated. Thanks, -Rob
  6. Hi all, I got some LR recently that I'm quarantining and I'm seeing a lot of aptaisia... Anyone willing to lend a bunch of hungry peppermints? I think 2-3 should do the trick in a week or so. I haven't seen any locally in a while. If anyone knows of any LFS that sells them I'm also interested. Thanks, -Rob
  7. Just wanted to see what sort of stuff you all keep/grow in the fuge. I just started mine about 2 weeks ago and so far got: - 2" of live sand - 3 small pieces of LR - a ball of Cheato - 1 tiny peppermint shrimp (dont think he would survive in my main tank) - 2 sexy shrimp (they're just sexy baby yeah! - 1 hitchhiker asterina star - lots and lots of various pods and coepods swimming and crawling around -Rob
  8. My gf will be definitely interested in the 2 Aqua medic ocean lights 250HQI pendants. Let me know if you part out. -Rob
  9. I'm interested. Just need to find the one I want... -Rob
  10. I'm looking for a place to buy some DC cooling fans. Can anyone provide some links? Thanks. -Rob
  11. I'm gonna pass on the Tang. Too many plans for the weekend. -Rob
  12. I'd like some comments from anyone who has several Green Chromis Damsels... Are they trully non-agressive when in a school? Are they always in a school, or do they disperse around the tank if there is enough room? My gf is looking for something to bring llife to her 260 tank. So far she got: 1 Yellow Tang 1 Blue Hippo Tang 2 Tomato Clowns 2 Firefish 2 Purple Firefish We're looking at adding about 7-8 of these to create some movement. Any other recommendations? She wants peaceful fish that will not eat each other. Thanks, -Rob
  13. Hmm, maybe that's where my two missing firefish gobies escaped to... -Rob
  14. Didn't the real 'Nemo' do the same exact thing? For the next few days watch out for pieces of rock stuck in the pump impeller. And whatever you do, never put the fish in bags close to an open window. -Rob (watched Finding Nemo way too many times...)
  15. That happened once to my gf's tank. I was able to get him out using my hand. Most nets can be bent in shape so that would be my approach. Just bend the net in a L shape and try to scoop him up. Depending on what you have in your overflow, you can also buy a smaller net. Use a net and a stick to guide him into the net. After about 30 minutes of trying you will be an expert in overflow Nemo catching. Let us know how it goes. Once you fish him out, you may want to rethink your overflow design. Simply adding some egg-crate or netting will prevent this from happening again. (thats what I had to do) -Rob
  16. Thanks Unni, There is nothing I can think of that could stress him out. When he arrived he was already stressed, I was hoping he would recover. He was eating well, but yesterday I noticed he was all beat-up from trying to scratch himself against the rocks. -Rob
  17. Has anyone had any luck with Rid Ich+ treatment? My small Blue Hippo Tang shows slight symtomps of Ich and I just wanted to get him treated ASAP. I already gave him a 4 minute freshwater/methylene blue dip, moved him to my Q-tank, and administered the recommended dose of 5ml. This stuff contains formalin and malachite green. Any thoughts? I didn't have much luck with Copper in the past with Tangs, so wanted to try something different. -Rob PS. I got this fish through Howard's PetSolutions order #2.
  18. Does anyone use 3/4" bulkheads that MarineDepot sells? I need to find out what the maximum size hole this bulkhead will work on. The website says 1.5" and I even called MarineDepot, but they would not actually take the time and measure it. I'd like to figure this out soon so that I can order 1" bulkheads for my refugium project if necessary. My 20gal refugium has 1.75" holes. Thanks! -Rob
  19. GaryL, DCDeacon, Seapods should be here on Friday. They shipped it yesterday. If you PM me your cell numbers I'll call you when it arrives. Thanks. -Rob
  20. Does anyone know where I can have a glass aquarium drilled? It's a 20 gal long that I'm gonna use for the fuge. Thanks. -Rob
  21. Hi, If you decide to part I'm interested in your Live Rock (20-30 lbs), Live Sand if any, and your critters (crabs, snails, etc...) I'm in Vienna/Tysons Corner area. -Rob
  22. Guys, I need some help designing a new fuge. I'm deciding between 15 and 20 gal tank. It will sit on a shelf just above my main 60 gal reef. Do I just drill 2 holes in the back for intake and overflow? Where can I get the glass drilled? Also, what size pump? I have a spare Maxi Jet 900 - will that work? Pumping water from the sump into the fuge and then draining into my reef - is that basically it? As far as so the contents of the fuge: Live sand, Cheato, LR? What am I missing? Any other advice? Thanks, -Rob
  23. After weeks of trying I finally caught that pesky yellow-tail damsel in the 260 FOWLR tank. My method was to use a modified 10 gal aquarium as a trap. I removed the side glass and used it as a trap door. Top of the 10 gal trap was covered with a close fitting piece of plexi glass. I even put some LR and some fake coral inside the trap to make it look more homey. After injecting some frozen brine shrimp inside the trap - it was just a matter of time before the damsel was inside. -Rob
  24. Order placed. Please PM me and indicate when you're gonna pick it up. It should be here on Thursday. DCDeacon / GaryL / Ne0eN: 1 bottle each - 4 oz. seapods / copepods - $25 -Rob
