  1. Thanks Joshifer, definitely some good tips. I started putting the sand in a container and lowering in first like you recommended and had some filter floss on hand to use. I also ended up leaving a live rock in the old tank throughout the process to help a little. In the end I transferred all the fish over last night into the cloudy water. By the morning the water was crystal and all fish and inverts made it surprisingly enough to me. My flasher wrasse gave me a few scares though.
  2. Thanks for the feedback. Filled her up last night and aside from one easily fixed bulkhead leak everything works great. I had to shorten my main overflow as there wasn't quite enough difference between the height of my main and open channels to develop a siphon.
  3. I still need to add 2 bags of sand as well
  4. Yeah this is not going well. Adding the sand without rinsing was not a good idea at all. No idea what sand the people were using who said no rinsing necccessary but it must not have been this. I added half a bag 5 hrs ago and it's still a dust storm. i'm in a holding pattern, cant move the fish because of the dust but can't keep them long since they aren't in much water. Tank water is being filter through a sock. Ideas?
  5. How long can I keep the fish in the old tank with no liverock? A period of hours is OK?
  6. Appreciate it. So I want the liverock on the bottom of the tank which is why I wanted to put liverock in first. It's tropic eden sand which is supposed to be super clean so I'm hoping to avoid a dust storm. I'll make some more new water, definitely do not have ideal parameters Just simple acclimation for temperature? Salinity should be the same
  7. The plan is to transfer everything in my current tank 50g to a new slightly larger 65g this weekend. I don't have all of the logistics quite worked out but the gist is - -I have 25-30 g of new saltwater in the new tank - remove all equipment from old tank I'm transferring to new and start cleaning/vinegar bath if there's time? - remove live rock from old tank and put in new - add new dry sand to new tank - transfer over a good portion of the old water to the new tank - move livestock over - install equipment on new tank - clean old tank etc I have 3 5g buckets and a 20g tote to accomplish this. Any tips? Am I missing anything big? Appreciate it
  8. I started working on some additional aquascape features while I fill my tank. I can't say I'm ecstatic with this cave but not really sure why or what I can do to improve it. Let me know what you think! This will be in addition to live rock I'm moving over.

    Hi

Aside from the knowledge you gain from this board and the meetings, the $20 membership fee is quickly recouped by buying equipment, livestock, etc from other members in the classifieds section and the SWAP program.
  10. Actually found some 3/4" male x 1" barb online. Home depot says they have some in stock so I'll have to check that out.
  11. Appreciate it. So a 3/4 male screw in fitting fits into the eheim? I can expand it to 1" -> 1" barb fitting -> 1" or 3/4" vinyl tubing??? -> 1" barb fitting -> 1" to 3/4" reducer -> into my 3/4" hard plumbing? Is that the least complicated solution? Or is it easier to just go 3/4" all the way in spite of small internal diameter on those 3/4" barb fittings?
  12. I'm looking to plumb my Eheim 1262 pump, the problem is the pump I'm using is currently hooked up to the system I'm upgrading from so I can't look at the pump to determine what fittings etc to use. I'm trying to run reinforced vinyl from the pump to the start of my hard plumbing, which is 3/4". What do I need to attach the eheim to the vinyl and the vinyl to the 3/4" hard plumbing? Barbed fitting but what size? Their ID is really small compared to standard fittings.
  13. Thanks. I went with 1 bag of reefflakes, 1 of mesoflakes, and 1 of miniflakes.
  14. I could probably do that for a one time thing. There's no place to store a brute trashcan in my apartment though. That would save quite the headache...
  15. Thanks, I'm thinking of going 50/50 reefflakes and miniflakes
  16. I've had one in my 50 for a few months. No problems yet...
  17. This is my current setup for reference. I'm light on corals but that'll change. Next challenge is mixing up 65g of water 5g at a time
  18. Yeah the emergency pipe is getting a trim. Is there a way to test this overflow without filling the whole tank? If I have to re-plumb I'd rather do it on an empty tank.
  19. Thanks guys. Yeah I'm loving the external overflow. Yeah the stand is KILLER. It far exceeded my expectations, very professional looking. With the laminate I'm pretty sure they can do any color you want so definitely get in touch with them. Yeah I assume the holes in the eurobrace are for wires, at least that's what I'm using them for. And I do have one of their lids on the way. I planned to have the lid ready when the tank was but there was a slight miscommunication on that front but the guys at AA are making it right and are top notch in terms of customer service.
  20. I bought my first tank, a 50g acrylic tank off of craigslist last October and I'm already upgrading! I wanted some better dimensions to work with so I decided to get Adam at AA to build me a 65g 48 x 18 x 18 tank and stand. I picked up the tank and stand a couple of weeks ago and have working on plumbing the thing. The stand is amazing, professional display quality piano black laminate. The tank has an external overflow which I've plumbed with a beananimal overflow system. I went with a Trigger sump Ruby 36 which I want to use to establish a refugium, something I don't currently have. I'll otherwise be transferring all of my other equipment over to start: Eheim 1262 return, SCA302 skimmer, Gyre 130, and Koralia something something. The livestock, rock etc will be transferred over and this is the part I'm most concerned about, any advice is appreciated. I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions along the way but this is a start. Let me know what you think!
  21. Also while we are at it, does anyone have personal experience with this sand? I know it's clean. Any other pros/cons?
  22. Does anyone know if reef flakes are sold locally anywhere? Thanks
