  1. Ya, I'm more worried about the driver more than anything. Now I'm thinking about using the APC line of drivers from meanwell. And for the LEDs I'm back to debating cheap Ebay version vs bridgelux array vs individual Red/RB/White LEDs! Too many choices... For the heatsink, I'm figure a worst case of ~1.2C/W. That would put it at around 60C. Not cool, but below the 85C that I believe is used in datasheets for lifetime specs of the LEDs. But I would definitely test before screwing anything in.
  2. Anyone ever use one of these LEDs/drivers off of ebay? I don't believe the stated output, but it should still be 2-3x the output of a normal CFL bulb. Wondering if anyone has any experience with them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/30W-Brightest-Driver-AC-85-265V-30W-LED-Cool-White-High-Power-Lamp-Bulb-Chip-/251336549178?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a84d3633a My stand is really cramped, so I'm looking for a low profile option over the current light clamp I have crammed in there now. I plan on using a video card heatsink which should do fine for 30 watts.
  3. Stupid question, but what are your hours on Tuesday? My wife will be in the area and wants to pop in to look at a couple of corals she liked on your website. I'm actually jealous that I'm not able to stop in with her!
  4. I was looking into Nilsen reactors and ran across this article about Kalk. I found it very informative. http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-05/rhf/feature/index.htm Sounds like less stirring/aeration is better (Figure 3), and Kalk dissolves really quickly in water (Figure 1).
  5. I remember reading a thread on RC debating GFCI vs grounding probe vs both. The example i remember reading was bad lighting fixture + grounding probe + no GFCI. If the lighting fixture has something wrong with the wiring and the metal case becomes electrified, and you happen to lean against it while working in the tank, there is now a path from light -> you -> tank -> grounding probe. Without a GFCI that could spell trouble. It is probably low risk, and only applies to items outside of the tank, but something to consider.
  6. Any LFS around here carry marco/reefcleaner/brs reef saver style dry rock? Around $2.50 a pound? I upgraded my tank and I have a couple of spots I want to add rock. I would prefer to be able to see the pieces if possible, but I was really happy ordering from reefcleaners last time and wouldn't mind doing that again if nobody carries it locally.
  7. I just found my first carpet surfer this morning too =( Going to head to home depot this week to start picking stuff up.
  8. 6 gallon sump (not running yet, but will be before adding anything else to the tank). ~35lbs LR + thinking about adding another 15lbs or so (again, will be done before fully stocking) Tunze 9002 DIY Nano GFO reactor
  9. So we just moved, so of course I used that as an opportunity to upgrade my tank from a 20 to a 29 (largest that would fit in the space I wanted to put it). Still working on getting everything settled in, but I've started to think about what new fish I want to add to the tank. Current inhabitants are in my sig. My wishlist would be: Yellow Watchman Goby/Pistol pair Kauderns Cardinal Indigo Dottyback That too much for a 29 gallon tank? Should I be worried about my pair of clowns bullying the new guys? Anyone have any experience with the Indigo Dottyback? From what I've read, they seem to be one of the less troublesome dottybacks and shouldn't bother my cleaner shrimp.
  10. Can't wait to see a review. I actually hope they re-release the PLS100 with the adjustment/locking knobs.
