  1. I have been battling a phosphate problem in my tank and could not find the source. Today I tested the water in my saltwater mixing container (a brute trash can) and got a reading of 52 on my hanna ultra low phosphorus checker (approximately .16 ppm). Do you think a good cleaning will solve this problem, or is the phosphate most likely leaking from the trash can itself? Short of replacing the container what would you recommend doing? I finally have my phosphates down to .03 in the tank, and now I am afraid to do a water change. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks, Brian
  2. I like the look of the blues, but is the intensity of the blues simply a personal preference, or do they have an effect of the corals? Currently I am only running my whites at 50%, how slowly should I increase the intensity of my whites? Also, since I have a shallow tank am I probably going to want to run my lights at a lower intensity than 70-75%? My lights are hanging 28" above the sand bed. My lights have seven time settings. I believe I have my lights running on the strongest intensity from 10a to 6p. Thanks everyone for the help.
  3. I have 2 18" acan 600 prisms over an 80 gallon rimless (48" x 24" x 16"). These lights allow me to adjust the intensity of the whites, blues and moonlights. How do I determine what is the best intensity to have these lights at. Is it just a matter of slowing turning up the intensity until my corals start to lose color? Also, does anyone else have these lights? If so, could you tell me what you have yours set at, and how high above the sand bed you have them set at. Thanks for any help.
  4. Thanks for all the help. I like the look of the wp40s, but I will look into the wp25s. Sounds like the mp10s won't be big enough. My substrate is the fiji pink, Grain size: 0.5-1.5mm.
  5. I have an 80 gallon reef (48"x24"x16"), and recently purchased two mp10s. I haven't set them up yet. I was talking to another wamas member, and he suggested that I should go with a larger powerhead. He didn't think the two mp10s would give me enough flow if I wanted to do sps corals. Do you agree with this. If so, should I get two mp40s, or would one be enough? Thanks for any help.
  6. I wanted to do glass because my tank is 48" x 24". My plan was to use two pieces of glass, and have two finger holes drilled in the front panel to allow me to easily move it. This way I would have easier access to my tank. I just thought a 4'x2' window screen would be a pain to constantly take on and off. Is a screen top better than glass?
  7. I want to put a glass cover on my rimless tank. Lost too many fish to jumping, so I need a top, but I want to keep the clean look of the rimless. The tank has 10mm glass, and I can't find an acrylic clip that would work. I found these stainless steel hooks that are used for an ADA cube garden tank. Do you think these would be safe on a saltwater tank? The clips would rest about 1.5-2" above the water level. http://www.thegreenmachineonline.com/shop/aquatics/aquariums-stands/cube-garden-hooks/ada-cube-garden-hooks-10mm Thank You.
  8. I will take #1. Can I get your paypal info, or is it on your website?
  9. I have a 4' x 2' rimless tank, and I would like to install a removable cover on it. I know most people use a screen top, but I do not care for that look. I would like to keep the clean look of the rimless, but be able to get some fish that are jumpers. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do? Thank You.
  10. Both phosphate and nitrate is at zero. coral hind, thank you for all your help.
  11. The tank is 80 gallons. I have a yellow eye kole tang, 2 ocellaris clowns, 2 mandarins, and an anthias ignitus. For clean up crew I have dwarf ceriths, florida ceriths, nerites, and nassarius. The clean up crew was just added this week, but are showing no interest. The kole tang hasn't touched it.
  12. Thank you. Any way to get rid of it?
  13. Can anyone tell me what this is that is growing on my rock. It looks like round green leaves. Are they good or bad? Thank you.
  14. Thanks for the heads up. I have been adding pods. I actually just added a bottle to my fuge on Thursday. They are eating PEMysis. I actually just saw some pods on my glass today for the first time, so I am hoping that the pods are finally starting to establish themselves. That picture was taken a couple weeks ago, and I feel like they have fattened up a good bit since. Their stomachs definitely aren't sunk in like they were in that picture.
  15. Yeah, I have a deep blue 80 gallon rimless, with a 40 gallon breeder for my sump/fuge. Lights: (2) Acan 600 series 18" prisms (2) koralia evolution 1400 with wavemaker eshopps s-150 cone skimmer Avast ato (2) BRS dosing pumps Apex controller (still haven't found the time to set this up) For livestock I have two mandarins, a yellow eye kole tang, 2 phantom clowns, 2 anthias ignitus, blood red shrimp, and various frags.
  16. Joined a few weeks ago, and just wanted to introduce myself. I am new to the hobby, started my first tank in December. My two year old daughter and I went to Petco last summer, and purchased a betta fish. I promised my wife that the betta fish is all I would buy. I became hooked, and a few months later I broke my promise and purchased an 80 gallon saltwater tank. I am very green, so any advise is appreciated. I do want to thank Steve and Vince over at Quantum Reefs, they have been a huge help in getting me started in this hobby, and they convinced me to join Wamas. I have attached a few pics of my setup. Thanks. Brian
  17. Thanks guys for all the advise. So far I have added two bottles of tiger pods, and 2, 500 pods from reefs2go. I added 2 red mandarins before my pod population was established. So I am afraid I am going to have a hard time establishing pods. I do have a fuge section in my sump. Right now it only has rock and some sea lettuce. Would I benefit from adding sand (maybe some from an established tank)?
  18. I am very new to the hobby, and a new member to Wamas. My tank is about 2 months old, and I think I should start looking into a clean up crew. 80 gallon DT (48" x 24" x 16"), 40 gallon sump. I have a 1.5" sand bed (carib sea fiji pink), and I started with 80 pounds of dry rock, and about 15 pounds of live rock. I am starting to get a good amount of growth on my dry rock and my sand bed. Don't know if any other information would be helpful. Couple questions. Where do you guys feel is the best place to get a CUC? Seen a lot of recommendations for reef cleaners, ccritters, and reefs2go. Should I just get one of their cleaner packages? Since my tank is new, and I started with dry rock would it be best to get a small CUC now, and add more as needed? Last couple questions. I am leaning towards no crabs, but what are peoples thoughts on starfish, urchins, sea cucumbers, and conchs? Sorry for so many questions at once, and thanks in advance for the help. - Brian
  19. Vince stopped by my house to bring me two Phantom clownfish before going to Origamis. My wife is having a kid this week, so me driving to their place was not an option. Huge help, and the clownfish look incredible. So thanks from me as well.
