  1. More more more! If you have good pictures, put them up! We have a program book to fill with club images. Excellent entries so far!
  2. Going to blow the lid off of MACNA with the big reveal??!?
  3. No, this is to feature people's tanks. I have a few dive trip photos I'd like to submit myself, but we're keeping it to the hobby.
  4. As many as you want, but be selective and put forward your best! Will modify the post to reflect this.
  5. Click the link below for details on a contest WAMAS is holding to find club members with outstanding images/tanks to feature in the MACNA 2015 program book. http://wamas.org/forums/topic/72844-macna-2015-program-book-photo-contest/
  6. As you know, WAMAS is hosting MACNA 2015 here in DC! As part of that process, we are assisting a professional publishing company in the design and content for the program book that will be handed to each and every participant who walks in the door at the event. As a nod to all of you in WAMAS, we would like to have a section of that program book dedicated to members' reef tanks! In support of that goal, we are offering a contest with the winning images displayed in the program book. The winners of this contest will have their images placed into the program guide for the world to see! The contest categories (and number of winners) will be: Full tank shots (4) * (1-2) spotlight features Invertebrates (2) Coral - softies (1), lps (1), sps (1), other which may include any runners up from previous (1) Fish (2) If you are chosen as a winner of the contest, your image will need to be available in high resolution for printing (300dpi) so please make sure that if you enter a photo you have the original available to submit. The top full tank shot(s) will have the opportunity to provide more details and potentially more images for a feature spotlight. Photos will be judged by the MACNA directors (with assistance from the publisher's graphic artists). All images chosen to be published will be properly attributed to the photographer. Additionally, a few sentences/paragraph describing any winning photos would be greatly appreciated! The contest will run from now until May 15. Winners will be announced around May 19. All full res images will be due upon notification on the 19th so that we can make this happen. Cheers and good luck! If you have any questions, let us know. PLEASE POST YOUR (lower res) PHOTOS IN THIS THREAD, THANKS!
  7. We are representing MACNA2015 at the show as well, stop by today and say Hi to Doug.
  8. I am on board with Origami's thoughts too. Using a fine filter sock would not hurt. I would def not mix gfo and carbon in a single reaction chamber.
  9. There was also correlation with too little light (or too blue) with HLLE in tangs many years ago. I would boost veg feeding (nori, etc) and reduce meaty foods.
  10. Does anyone know of a shop that will custom cut glass? I've cut it on my own before, but I have no way to smooth the edges so I would like to ID a source. Prefer MoCo/Frederick Cty, but am not too far out of Loudon Cty either.
  11. The only thing it has ever bothered was a frag of pink pocillipora I tried to put in the tank. It ate the whole thing (probably just as well). It pushed the new square tail bristletooth tang around a bit, but otherwise it doesn't bother a thing.
  12. Another fast update from today. I shrank it a bit much and the colors are washed out, but you get the idea:
  13. I cannot tell if they have runners or not. They are very tiny and sort of far back into the tank. Unfortunately, they are also on my main (giant) flat rock and if they become problematic will be a nightmare to remove. I'll see if I can get the waterproof camera in there and get some macro shots.
  14. I've been in the hobby a while, but I've never seen these before. They must have come in on a frag a couple of months ago (yet another reason to use fresh frags). Can anyone ID? They appear to be clavularia-like. They are around 1mm at their widest. They are only on one rock near where I put a frag, although they are spreading on that rock. I am guessing that these might be a hassle once they grow in further.
  15. Wow. Neptune responded very quickly. They think its the display is shorting out the bus. I will try to do the firmware update first, see if it fixes anything and then do an RMA on the display if that fails.
  16. I have also discovered that my CO2 regulator, because it is electronic, shuts off when the power flickers. My reactor has been running tank water for 3-4 days now... which is why my pH is down. darn this technology.
  17. Thanks for the info. I am behind on firmware. I will try to do an update this evening. Updates, since I have to use a laptop are a nuisance on this system. They need to solve that issue like Ecotech has done with their Reeflink so it can be successful via wifi.
  18. The story: Overnight, I started getting warnings/texts from the Apex unit that my temp was low (73 by 6am - usually locked at 78). I went downstairs, but the display was still reading 78.0 (and pH 8.05, which for that time at night is a bit higher than average). I started digging around and realize that anything set to OFF by default (heaters, skimmer, topoff, etc) were not working at all. I then went onto the web portal for it and saw that it was reporting 73.1 and pH of 7.89 which is normal for pH if quite low for heat. I wound up unplugging the display unit from the system and suddenly everything was fine again. The tank is heating up (as fast as 2x300w heaters can swing it) and the other devices are now working fine. I then plugged the display unit back in and it all failed again. SO. Why/how could the display unit cause the entire system to fail? It was non-responsive to button presses and obviously wasn't updating its values either. Anyone else ever heard of an issue like this? I'm going to cross post to Apex's forums and see what others have to say. Pretty sad that the unit isn't even 2 years old and it failed.
  19. Just a fast update. Some pics I took with the point and shoot (without the pumps off, oh well).
  20. Here's the thing I'm thinking about: Creating a DIY lamp of LEDs that contain mostly UV - specifically for a reptile, but that shouldn't matter here really. And while I recognize that buying either a premade CF or similar reptisun setup might be a heck of a lot easier, wheres the fun in that? I would like to put together a system and am looking for where you find parts. UV lamps source (need both UVA (400~320nM) and UVB (315~280nM) and a few white LEDs. Heat sinks/controller/voltage control/etc sources. And a way to put it together that is both practical and sleek looking. For the LEDs: I need to see how many would be necessary to generate around (of UV) 20 W/cm3 at 12-18". And thanks for any input!
  21. Just took a couple. Not very high quality, but enough to get the idea across. I'll be sure to take pics of the growth since the last round soon. Whole tank shot from back a bit... hard to see any detail. 180 degree panorama. not much different than the above. a few fish really wanted to say hi.
  22. That would require pictures or something. :p I should do that soon. Overall, everything is growing well. SPS are thriving under the Ecotech Radions (except perhaps the pink/red ones). Haven't added any coral in a while, although I've had some ups and downs with fish in the past 6 months. I'll see what I can do, although I won't promise anything this week as work and travel might be a major issue.
  23. So badly wish I could make this (unfortunately on travel). I've been desperately waiting for a new batch of clams and am sad I will miss it. Everyone else who is available should definitely make the trip out!
