Hatchling

Hatchling (3/13)

  1. No way! I used to do 45-75 gallon reefs but the nano thing is just awesome. I love being able to move the tank in a car seat, i love one gallon water changes (and not having to dose). Space...will be an issue soon...but i think i still have room on the sandbed for 4-5 LPS;) heehee. I will be upgrading...as soon as i have a permanent home!
  2. Whohoo. I just picked up some coral from FishnReef and as always, was not disappointed. Their corals are always as represented or better--nice large frags, fully encrusted onto the plugs. I'm so thankful to have such a wonderful coral seller who lives so close. Nick is fast to respond over email and accommodating. I will continue to get ALL my frags from them...until they run out of new species...which will be several years even after I someday upgrade to my dream tank! For now, i think my 12g AP is full! The half dead green slimmer i've had in my tank under PCs for months and was slowly dying, I have since upgraded to LEDs and its now recovering. NEW frags: Blue stag, purple haze monti (WOW!), supergirl monti, rainbow monti, pink pocillopora, leishmans red tabling acropora (really likes high flow- those polyps are out already!) Old frags: (also from fishnreef--but lived under pc's so little growth (except for birdsnest!)green purple rim monti cap, green digi, purple digi, BOP Birdsnest, Green Slimmer, pink stylo I highly recommend! Oh--and the cute as a button B&W occi is from them too
  3. that's about it. haven't decided on deresa or maxima or crocea. Experiences with vendors? Any aquacultured? (close to metro station ideal:) if not, any online stores people have had good experiences with regarding clams?
  4. Whoohooooooo I'm a hatchling!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. Hi all, I know this is not marine, but just wanted to say i visited Pristine Aquariums and was extremely pleased to see their "feeder" goldfish in excellent health, size, and coloration. I am used to seeing feeders many dead and dying, but these goldies looked fabulous. Some verrrry pretty red on white colors, perfect for a pond. So if anyone is looking for healthy goldfish for your pond, check them out! at 10/1$, you can't go wrong:) I actually considered getting a few and taking them on the airplane back to WI for my parents pond, and then realized that was pretty crazy:)
  6. BTW I just wanted to make sure i didn't have a super dumb seahorse or really bad luck so I looked up seahorse compatibility with euphillia sp (torch, hammer, frogspawn) at http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/t...tankmates.shtml. They are rated a 4 (from 0 to 4, 0 being safe and 4 being "has no business in a seahorse tank") OK done preaching. I just love ponies soooo much
  7. I'm happy your seahorses haven't had any run-ins with the hammer and frogspawn, but that doesn't mean it should be recommended. I kept seahorses for a couple years and let me tell you, there's nothing worse then seeing a horse killed by a coral. I learned the hard way. Its simply too risky, and while some have success, i say, stay away. The seahorses will be the stars of the tank, and since this is for a school, avoid any potential problems and play it safe. Sam, PLEASE do not add the Torch coral especially. There are so many other beautiful and horse friendly coral. Including macro algae which looks fantastic in horse tanks. ( I just got 4 neat species, but there just little frags now, when they've grown out, I'd be happy to donate some for the horsies hitching posts!) Also, you MAY be able to find someone willing to donate, or cut you a great deal on the horses. A lot of aquarists have so much luck raising H. ERECTUS, that they really have to give them away (I got 4 gorgeous 4" yellow and pink erectus from a hobbyist who simply coudn't get rid of them for just a few coral i traded.) If you post something on seahorse.org you *might* get lucky. (there is a online website SEAHORSE.ORG which is a WEALTH of information on seahorses, in case anyone didn't already know that Here's a pic of my now dismantled 46 gallon bowfront reef seahorse tank. There's 4 ponies in there you might see if you look hard. Just to give you an idea of all the coral that can be kept with seahorses, without endangering them.
  8. Thanks I'll check them out. I do use zip car, but hate to spend 14$ for a car to p/u a 15-25$ worth of shrimp and crabs!
  9. So i think the title says it all. Looking for a LFS with fair prices on pep shrimps and emerald crabs. Prefer is its within 1 mile of a Metro RAIL, but will take metro bus if necessary. I live on the orange and blue line in Rosslyn, VA. I can also bike about 3 miles (getting over ankle surgery) from a Metro stop to the LFS.... Anyone know of any mass transit friendly options? THANKS!
  10. Fortunately you have some pretty hardy fish in there, but I definately understand the concern with elevated ammonia levels. I run purigen in my tank, and it has saved me many times I'm sure from ammoina/ nitrate/ nitrite spikes that might otherwise have happened (I had a high bioload with no filtration other than the bag of purigen in front of a koralia and my liverock). My understanding is that purigen and chemi pur elite perform the same functions.
  11. Exciting! So you're not feeding them anything--even small BBS or trying cyclopeeze? I would be shocked if any survived without feeding, most baby fish need so much concentrated live foods when young, a fuge simply couldn't have enough unless you culled (oh no! I'll take the extra!! all but one or two, then maybe you'd have a chance with the "natural" method. (I tried raising seahorse fry with no luck, so I do have a little idea of what doesn't work! haaha) Good luck on getting everything set up for the next batch and keep us updated on progress.---with PICS of course
  12. I agree, I bought a fancy (but cheap 130$ including s/h) unit off ebay but i've found the "waste water" line (ie water that's only gone through the first 3 stages) tests 0 for chlorine/ Chloramines, although i must say i don't test for anything else:(. But it tastes GREAT! (use it for all my drinking water it saves me so much on bottled water!). And my coral have been doing very well. That's my 2cents! I was weary of the cheap ebay units, but i have to say, i was extremely impressed with the quality of my unit and the faucet quick connect option is perfect for someone like myself for whom drilling into the plumbing is just beyond my skill level at this point to do permanent hookup!
  13. OH, this is so exciting! Definately try BBS (the smaller type) and maybe even cyclopeeze, of course rots will prob be your best bet:). I can't wait to see how rearing goes. PICS!! If you are able to breed them, I'll have to set up a macro biotope tank just for some CB pipes! People have done it on seahorse.org and nano-reef. But the african blue striped is so beautiful, not sure i know of anyone rearing their young! Keep us updated, even failures can help inform other people trying to breed them. GOOD LUCK!
