  1. My Green Bubble Tip Anemone has moved from a hole in a rock with full light (its previous long term home) to moving outside the rock on to the sand, up the side of my reef and now into a cave with little light. This is Bethesda Jims old tank, this is my one week anniversary of having it set up here, 6 days since the anemone was placed in the tank. Jim thought it was on the verge of splitting. I have not tested my paramters tonight but all week PH 8.4 zero nitrates, trites and ammonia. Salinity with a Swing Arm Hydrometer just tested at 1.025 (un adjusted) at 82 degrees. I am still playing with the flow in my tank - so that may be it - BUT I AM SUPRISED IT IS IN A CAVE. Its clown is picking at the ends and flipping sand on it... IDEAS?
  2. What are the small strings extending from some of my corals? Thanks - soo much to learn.
  3. That recommendation arrived just in time for the BZA group buy!! Another oddity - I clipped some spinach to my magnet cleaner and th etwo Tangs have not touched it so far. Jim only fed flake but I would think they would be interested??
  4. Swing Arm Hydrometer that I wash out with FW after each use. I test the Salinity once a day around 5:30 AM - just missed that refracotmeter GB!
  5. So, I moved Bethesda Jim's tank last week all parameters still on target, PH 8.4, salinity around 1.024 (seems to go down a bit some days), 80 degrees, no Ammonia, Nitrate or Nitrate. I have an anemone - still not sure what type. Jim said when he got it it just crawled right into the whole in a rock and never moved. One of his clowns was in love with it and never moved out of it. SInce I moved, the clown spends some time there, but maybe 10%. Since I set up the tank and redid the rock I put it in about the same place. My flow is probably pretty different from his flow. Each powerhead is mounted on the front side, one to the left pushes water agains the front glass and the one on the right pushes water towards roughly the return from the sump. I have lots of things on the top to include polyps and xenia that get pretty unhappy if I shoot the flow across them... The Anemone has been somewhat retracted or at night spread out so I can clearly see the mouth. The tentacles seem to be more layed out flat rather than reaching towards the light. This morning I woke to find it had removed itself from the hole and was sitting on the sand floor between its old rock home and my "reef wall". Probably a lower circulation area. With no lights on the tentacles seem to be closer and straight up (what I guess I would expect) and the clown was hanging out in there. -- Should I be alarmed or concerned? Should I move the old rock off of the sand floor (I want more space there any way for rics etc.) Wish I had a picture... I have another coral (no id., hard, looks like a lollypop tree maybe a blastomussa merleti) that has strings coming off of it. Again - should I be concerned? I have some polyps that look like they have individual feather duster worm strands on them. Again, should I be concerned? Below is a list of what Jim told me everything was (bad id is not his fault, I took bad notes): Please forgive any spelling errors!! Green Slimer Polyps (Zoas) Yellow star Green Purple Chocolate Orange Green Mushroom Brown Digitata Acropora Nana Red Manipora Ultra Superman Mushroom Blastamosa Merleti Acan Lord Finger Leather Frogspawn Torch Carpet Matopora Bubble Coral Australian Ice Man Maze LPS Australian Chocolate Maze LPS Thanks, sorry for all of the detail. I well get pics and a dedicated tank forum thread up soon.
  6. I thought Wrasses grew pretty big. Maybe I can drill a hole between my 75G and my 55 FW (make that SW - hmm) and let them run between!! Kinda like those old habitrail systems.
  7. That was what I figured. I do not want them beating up on each other - although I know they were happy together before I bought and moved them to my house. I assumed the Yellow Tang was th empre aggressive of the two, so I put the Brown in the tank first for about 12 hours. No one seems to of set up territory yet. There are lots of tunnels but no true caves. I may actually push the rock back and cut down on the open space in the back which would create a few caves and give me more open sand area. Thanks again, Eric.
  8. The Skimmer is an ASM G-1. It is generating a lot of bubbles but no foam overflow at this point. 20G Sump with live rck/rubble.
  9. I like Tangs, besides Triggers they are probably my favorite fish. Since Triggers are not real good in a reef tank I am thinking of adding more Tangs - but... I have a Yellow (4 inch) and a Sopas/Braonw Tang (almost 5") in a 75G Reef Tank. This is the tank I bought from Bethesda Jim set up Friday and all water paramaters are normal (although salinity is falling by .001 a day for the past two days). There are also two clowns, a blue chromis, a coral beauty, and a bi-color. I know nothing good happens fast in this hobby, so I am trying to plan... I would like to buy either a Hippo Tang/Royal Blue and a Purple (from the BZA Group buy) Eventually a Mandarin, not sure what else. My Brown Tang is being a bit aggressive towards the yellow. He tends to follow the yellow around. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you, Eric.
  10. I changed my flow direction yesterday and it started to blast my xenia, it was not happy and started to retreat. I moved the flow and its happy now. So I have mine in low flow, but near the top of the tank. Seems happy there. Eric.
  11. Rick, Thanks for your help yesterday. Yes, I added the sand after a good wash - that took about two hours!! Everything except the fish are in the tank. I ran mechanical filtration on the reef last night and it was crystal clear this morning. The fish are in my old 30G - I will check that water again tonight. Everything looks good so far. I added 40 pounds of Aragonite - that stuff is expensive! Thanks, eric.
  12. Given the below, should I move the fish to the main tank? I set up my new tank last night - bit of a trauma. I bought Jim Bethesda's tank - but have issues with hooking up my RODI unit. So I had to buy water and used about 20 gallons of distilled Salt Water. Everything looks good this morning, tank parameters: Temperature: 82 F pH: 8.4 Salinity: 1.0249 SG Nitrate: 0 mg/l Nitrite: 0 mg/l Ammonia: 0 mg/l I have a number of hard and soft corals to put in. I have the fish in another tank about 15 gallons right now, but will add more today. There are two clowns, 2 tangs a coral beauty, a blue chromis and a bi-color. Temp: 82 pH: 8.4 Salinity: 1.025 Nitrate: 0 Nitrite: 0 Ammonia: 0.25 There is a Current Ocean 100 skimmer in the tank (almost no foam) with a few pieces of live rock. Thoughts?
  13. Where would you buy sand and how much would you buy? Roughly what is the cost? Thank you, Eric.
  14. Thanks - anyone else? Can I house the corals for a day in a tank with low light, heat and aeration?
  15. Tank is 75 Gallons with an overflow, sump (no refugium), 150 pound LR, 4 inch sand bed. I have already posted a few threads for advice on moving Bethesda_Jim's soon to be mine tank. This is the plan as it shapes up. I would appreciate any comments or advice thank you!! This is the tank description from Jim's post at: Tank totally pictured are 5 different zoas, a couple of brains (one with neon green around the mouth), green star polyps (under control), and other random corals. Two tangs, two clowns (one true one false), an awsome coral beauty, a blue chromis and a bi-color. The Plan: I have two 10 gallon and a 30 gallon tall tank, empty each with regular lights set up. - Yesterday I moved SW and about 8 pieces of rock from Jim's sump to my place. - Today I will move more SW, sump rock and some of the loose corals. Place in waiting tanks using Jim's SW. I will start making my saltwater with a RODI at my place tonight. 2 hours from p/u to tank. - Tomorrow (TH) I will move more SW, sump rock and corals (depending on remaining space). 2 hours from p/u to tank. - Friday: Pray 1. Obtain a couple of scoops of live sand and water to transfer to tank at my house (do not rinse) 1a. Move remaining SW, fish, rock and coral and some sand to my house (Trip 1), unload and return, 2.5 hours round trip. 2. Move sump, skimmer, tanks, stand, etc. 3. Wash sand in FW 4. Set up tank 5. Add sand 6. Add SW to LR height 7. Add Rock 8. Fill rest of SW 9. Fire up Skimmer, pumps, etc. 10. Add coral 11. Add fish Set up will take as long as it takes, but I will likely be doing it myself. I only have someone to help me move, but not set up in the afternoon. Thoughts, Opinions, Options? Thanks, Eric.
  16. UPDATE: The tank move from Bethesda to Myersville (21773) will take place on Friday 9 May. BTW I am 10 minutes from Mr. Coral. Unless I have some afternoon help in Myersville I plan to unload and set up the tank Friday night around 7PM. If anyone can help during the afternoon I would rather do it then!! Jim and Rick are helping me breakdown the tank in Bethsda - time TBD. ==================== Hi everyone, I am buying Bethesda Jim's 75G set up, fish, rock. stand and everything else. Provisions will be provided to movers PLEASE HELP!! Thanks, Eric.
  17. Wreck, I can not picture this - you set it on PVC Pipe? Did you slice the pipe in half or was it very small diameter stuff?
  18. Treesprite, what was your method? Also if I have pure base rock (which I doubt everything looks like it has something fun growing on it), do I set that in the tank before I add the sand?
  19. Since I will kill everything when I wash the sand - should I invest in a clean up crew? Thanks again, Eric.
  20. Where do you buy sand and what type? If I go the second route (wash it) how long should I delay placing the live rock, coral and fish back in the tank? I assume the issue here is that disturbing the sand will release toxic gas? Thanks, Eric.
  21. I am buying Bethesda Jim's 75G tank and moving it next week . He has 3-4 inches of live sand in the tank. Call me cheap, but I do not want to buy new sand -- that said what would you recommend (to include buying more sand and if so where?). Oh and I could use some help!! Thank you, Eric.
  22. Are you volunteering your little brother?? To clean sand do I run it through salt water? Any danger to the stuff living in the sand?
  23. Thanks Rick and Shawn. Does anyone know how to edit the time/date I put in the initial post (the text that shows up on the forum page under the title)? I may load in the morning, make the run up here, get the live stuff in the waiting tanks and then wait for help in the evening to move the tank and set the rock. I just want to avoid driving during rush hour. Thanks, Eric.
