  2. Looks really good. I did something very similar, although I did have a phosban reactor, I made my own carbon reactor out of a pasta container I got at target for about 6 bucks, and daisy chained the two together, and the results have been very good.
  3. My maroon and I go at it everytime I do maintenance, with her being the victor. Needless to say, I do as little maintenance with my hands in the tank as possible, and I feed with a turkey baster.
  4. Scott I did the exact same thing on my ASM: Be careful as stated previously. The plastic of the cup is very thin. The tube then runs to a gallon milk jug. I clean the cup and riser every 2-3 days like clockwork, so the laziness thing doesn't come into play with me, but I can see how it could encourage some laziness. HTH.

    ASM Skimmer Cup Drain Mod
  6. Does anyone know of a local store carrying these? In particular I'm looking for the SE versions. Brian
  7. Any suggestions on the best place(s) to buy MH retrofit kits? I think I'm going to replace most of my T5s with MHs. Thanks, Brian
  8. At least no one asked me why a cell phone was in my tank.
  9. My coral beauty and GSM are best friends, and I dare someone to prove otherwise!
  10. Anyone else have a similar grouping, or personal experience?
  11. How often are you performing water changes? As far as I know, the skimmer won't necessarily pull all of those 'trates out. As I'm sure with that much food it's not all reaching the skimmer. Things keep eating and then pooping I'm sure it's just a result of the food load. Not necessarily a bad thing, just means things are being eaten and/or broken down. Do you have a fuge? Some macros might help with export, or a RDSB might help out via NNR. Just my .02, but I could be full of crap for all I know.
  12. Wow...that is absolutely the coolest thing I've heard in a while. I think I read or saw a program a while ago about the intelligence of Dolphins, some scientists seem to think they may actually be the smartest mammals on the planet. It certainly isn't our species
  13. I think it mainly has to do with the fact that tangs "seem" to be one of the more readily available species in the trade, but very few people do any research at all on their natural environments. For some reason people really like to reccomend them as "beginner" fish. I've even seen juvie hippos in nano cubes. Now that really does aggravate me, particularly when someone has no plans or hasn't even given a thought to upgrading in the future. I know they are natural grazers who cover large territories, and most publications, authors, etc. seem to say that a 4ft tank is the minimum size for the Ctenochaetus genus, and even some of the Zebrasomas. I just really wanted to know why a 90 would be preferrable to a 75, given the slight difference in dimensions. I'll probably be upgrading to a 6 footer within the next 3-4 years anyway. Just thought perhaps a Kole would be a good addition for the time being. And you are right, the damsels need some type of enforcement authority!! Nasty little buggers.
  14. I suppose so, though I don't think Phil was being a "Tang Police Officer" like some replies I've seen on other boards. I still have quite a bit to learn, particularly about fish. I'm honestly just asking for my own education. I had kind of decided on the Kole because they have great personalities, are living vacuum cleaners, don't break the bank, and don't have the aggression issues associated with other tangs. I'm planning on using the 'fuge for macro growth / tang food. I suppose I should probably start my dedicated tank thread soon.
  15. I would directly feed mine 2-3 times a week, I tried to provide a meaty diet composed of a home brew of PE Mysis, Cyclopeeze, silversides, krill and oyster eggs, and formula one, that I would mix with some zoe/selcon and chop up and freeze into small bars, then break off chunks about the size of it's mouth. Between the direct feeding, and the Maroon taking care of it he tripled in size in 6 months and developed awesome coloration. HTH -Brian
  16. Phil- Please pardon my ignorance if I am missing something obvious. What is the main difference between the 75 and the 90? (I did obtain a college degree, and I remember learning this thing called math, so "15 gallons dummy!" jokes aside ) They are both 48x18 correct? Does the extra 5 inches of vertical space make that much of a difference? If you mean total water volume, I'm running a 33 gallon refugium , and 20 gallon sump. Total system volume is approximately 115 gallons. Thanks again for the input. -Brian
  17. I found myself listening to Hank Williams Sr songs on my iPod after my tank crashed. However, if I had the AC I would have probably still been listening to my daily regimen of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, instead of crying. At least my wife didn't leave me, and neither of the dogs ran away from home.
  18. Ok so here's the situation: Old tank melted down- Bad heater, Bad . I'm going to get a few new fish for the 75. What are everyone's thoughts on this stocking list for the 75? Coral Beauty (Current) GSM (Current) 2x Sohal Tang Just Kidding.... 2x Captive Bred Banggai Cardinal 1x Kole Tang 1x Yellow Watchman Goby! Thanks in advance
  19. How old is the tank Ric? I found with my other tanks, that the cyano was just a part of the maturation cycle and eventually cleared up on its own, though the additional flow did help keep it from spreading.
  20. I know you're not looking for it, but hang in there dude. You and I both have been through alot of crap the last few weeks, back problems, exploding heaters etc. Just build it bigger and better than before, and I'll keep my ears and eyes open for a 144 for you.
  21. I am wondering this very same thing man. So sorry to hear about this. This is almost the exact same thing that happened to me. Anyone know what the elements are composed of? Or, what that little capacitor type do-dad thingy is filled with?
  22. Ditto what Jamal said. I fed my hammer Mysis and he grew like a beast. You can also take some cyclopeeze and target feed with a syringe, they'll eat that up.
  23. Join the club dude. I just had a faulty heater wipe out my entire tank. Sorry to hear this.
