My nitrates are a bit high and will be doing water changes to help reduce. Right now, my fuge is lit only at night when the halides are off.

When is your fuge lit? Does anyone light the fuge 24/7?

None that I've ever noticed. Until I used it to store "spare parts", meaning starfish and shrimp being grown out to a size that they survive in the tank at, I had mysids and pods galore as well as stars, etc. I still see tiny ones, but the bigger ones get eaten by the stars and peps.

I'm on the PM only cycle (i.e. when tank lights are off)...

I think there is pleanty of growth in my refuguim...

24/7, but that's only because my timer is broken.

People use the reverse photo period to keep the ph more stable (if they have macroalgae growing in the fuge). My Ph stays pretty stable anyway even with the broken timer.

One tank fuge is lit 2am - 10pm. It is a display fuge so I like it off during the hours of 10pm-2am. 20 hours.

The other tank fuge is behind cabinet doors and lit 24/7. Growth is about the same.

Thx all. I was hoping that if I kept my fuge light on for a longer period, it would help reduce trates.

For those of you using the Lights of America fixtures over your fuge, it is very easy (and little or no cost) to set these lights on an alternate cycle from the main tank. Simply pull the built-in photo sensor from the LOA light fixture and extend it to the main tank area. When the lights on the main tank come on, the LOA lights will shut off and vice-versa.

You could have a defective photo sensor or the lights in your room are not strong enough to trigger it. Place the sensor under a bank of T5's of MHs and see what happens. New sensors can be picked up at the local Radio Shack if yours is defective.
