Coronavirus (n. COVID19) Impact to WAMAS Operations

The widespread outbreak of Coronavirus is increasingly impacting our lives as each day brings more cases and more changes to plans and schedules. WAMAS is not immune to these forces and near term plans may be impacted.

Officers have been working diligently to prepare for our April 18th Spring Meeting. We have a speaker lined up and have just requested use of the cafeteria at Luther Jackson Middle School in Fairfax County. (An earlier site request was rejected due to renovation construction startup.)

As of today, we are planning on holding the meeting on April 18th, as scheduled. However, as you can understand, our plans are highly susceptible to change based on the risks associated with the spread of the virus. Our plans are subjected to change by both external forces (e.g. speaker ability/willingess to travel; disruption to the availability of the space requested (most likely a policy decision that will be made by FCPS)), and internal decision making.

On this second point, WAMAS officers will continue to monitor the situation and will abide by the latest guidance that we receive from the school system, local, state and national government agencies to do our part to keep our members and our communities safe. Your safety is and will always be our top concern in any gathering. We will assess our situation based on guidance from these outside entities and other data that we may have available to us, and will make a decision to proceed, postpone, or cancel the meeting as needed.

Stay tuned. We will post updated information as conditions change and decisions are made.

Yesterday (March 16), the CDC issued guidance recommending that, for the next 8 weeks, organizers cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the US. The WAMAS Spring Meeting, scheduled for April 16 meets those criteria. Consequently, we will either cancel or postpone the meeting, or move it to an online format. Officers are discussing our options and will post our plans as soon as we are able.

Again, the WAMAS Spring 2020 Meeting will NOT take place as a face-to-face gathering on April 18.
