squiddly August 22, 2006 August 22, 2006 (edited) Hello everyone. Just found the group's site after having had my tanks for about 2 months now. I'm new to all of this so the learning curve looks quite steep from here, but I'm trying anyway :-). I have an aquapod 24 with sunpod lighting, and an acrylic 120 with protein skimmer, sump system, and 2 maxjet powerheads. The aquapod is where I'm starting to learn about coral, purchasing frags and small bits from various places and seeing how they work. I have a few gobis in the tank with them, as well as peppermint shrimp, hermits, and snails. So far so good, mostly, although I lost a short tentacle plate coral recently. Boo hiss. The 120 currently has no corals (til we get back from vacation end of Sept) a purple tang, flame angel, jawfish, watchman gobi, flame angel, pair of wrasses whose name I forget, pair of false perculas, and pair of black and white perculas (along with hermits). My question is - is this anemone that rode in on a rock actually an evil majano, or an ok BTA? There have been plenty of votes on both sides, and I am confused. Thanks! HowardofNOVA August 23, 2006 August 23, 2006 Kill'm quick! I usually kept a small plastic container around with a tablespoon full of kalk powder in a little water that would still allow to go through needled syringe and keep that handy for anytime you see one of these buggers around! Hit them fast, hard and often until you see them no more!

Does one do the same to it? I hate the idea of killing something, but if that's what I gotta do....
YBeNormal August 24, 2006 August 24, 2006 They are deceptively pretty. If you want a whole tank full of them and not much of anythg else, keep 'em around. Otherwise you have to do the dirty deed as soon as possible...
Ne0eN August 24, 2006 August 24, 2006 I've actually seen someone sell them on eBay... "Rare anemone" -- Rob
YBeNormal August 24, 2006 August 24, 2006 Yeah, I've also read stories of folks paying $40 or more for them in LFS' with the same description, "Rare Anemone!"
traveller7 August 24, 2006 August 24, 2006 They're kinda pretty :-)Some of us collect the different varieties, but you'll want to be able to isolate the little buggers which is not easy. fwiw: I have had pretty good luck isolating them on a piece of rubble, surrounded by sand, but on occassion they will release and tumble so you will stiil need to zap them when they escape.
squiddly August 25, 2006 Author August 25, 2006 I Joes Juiced em. Hopefully that will be it. Kinda sad. Oh well.
dbartco August 25, 2006 August 25, 2006 You may have to do that more than once, keep and eye out. By the way, if they spread, they sting corals, killing all they touch. No need to feel sad. unless you are loonking to keep a species only tank.

No need to feel sad. unless you are loonking to keep a species only tank. Naw, not yet. I'm now figuring out what kinds of pretty corals I want in my tank, picking pretty ones with help from Marine Scene and a couple mail order. I would be most annoyed if something decided to kill them before I figure out what I'm doing. We go on vacation in a couple weeks, and when we return.... time to populate the 120 gallon tank with coral. Got any suggestions for stuff that a flame angel won't find unbelievably yummy?
chefthomasr August 27, 2006 August 27, 2006 I would stay away from sps for now. I have noticed the pygmy angels seem to leave most lps and softies alone, however, some softies can be dangerous in a tank when stressed. I.e. releasing toxins and such things. Euphilia, green star polyps, mushrooms, zooanthids, button polyps..... Good luck! Thomas p.s. You don't need a syringe for the anemone, just put the kalkwasser mix in a dropper and squirt directly on top of the thing. I have read that if you tear the skin, it could actually help spread them. I can't say I have seen it first hand, but I don't pierce them and I have pretty good luck. FWIW

Right now I'm waiting for the mad scientist husband who continually says "this is YOUR hobby" then I catch him drilling holes in my tank and playing with the plumbing. He says he's going to rework my sump. I am afraid.... very afraid. Anyone near Great Falls who wants to send the man a reality check before it's too late? :-)
YBeNormal August 29, 2006 August 29, 2006 It's already too late! Just be glad that he shares an interest in your hobby, even if it is from a Tim the Toolman perspective. It could be much worse!

You're right. It could be worse. I shut my pumps off to do some feeding and my sump overflowed. He says, "oh, I'll fix that....by the way, want me to build you a refugium?" Well of COURSE I do, silly man. "I'll just have to change some of my plumbing around, and....." I'm missing SO much with the aquapod all in one thing. Watching him do modifications is almost as fun as watching reef critters......almost :-).
