Michael is a cell and molecular biologist with a passion for corals and coral biology currently residing in
Albany, NY. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, he transplanted to Akron, OH at the age of 4 where Jacques
Cousteau specials peaked his interest in the world under the sea. While in graduate school at the Baylor
College of Medicine, he started his first reef tank after years of keeping freshwater aquaria. It was
during this time that he also learned of the total demise of the Jamaican reefs, which has fueled his
interest to see better outcomes for other reefs. In 1999, Michael moved to Washington, DC and shortly
thereafter helped found the Washington Area Marine Society, where he was president until he moved
to NY in 2005. It was through his role in developing the program for MACNA XVII which was hosted by
WAMAS , that he met and became friends with Justin Credabel.

His broad background encompassing genetics, cellular interactions, developmental programs,
reproductive biology, and cancer all contribute to his evolving views on coral biology, as mechanisms are
conserved throughout evolution. He has over 20 filings and issued patents from the USPTO and 34 peer
reviewed publications and has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National
Institute of Justice.

In 2017 he founded the Credabel Coral Lab and Gallery in New London CT with Justin Credabel Grabel
after an adventurous trip to St. Martin, brought the realization that he had much to contribute to coral
reef ecology that could be accomplished through this one of a kind operation. He is currently working on
several lines of research to improve husbandry, accelerate coral growth, and lower overall costs for
coral aquaculture. In parallel, he is driving innovation in the biotech arena where corals may have utility
for human health applications. For down-time, Michael is an avid fly fisherman and explores many of the
rivers and streams throughout NY and New England.

Topic:  A Deep Dive into Aminos for the Reeftank.

Amino acids are a core component to all life, and are derived from dietary sources and
biosynthesis, and in the case of corals, symbiosis. The talk will explore the basic biology of
a.a.’s, past scientific studies on corals and aminos, work at Credabel Coral on developing a
unique cocktail of aminos using a scientific based approach, and how supplementation can
benefit both the corals and the overall health of the reef tank.
